Trelleborg

Trelleborg is a nice little southern Swedish town, perhaps sometimes overshadowed by other towns on the southern coast of Skåne, such as Ystad and Skanör-Falsterbo. We have many times driven to Trelleborg and then continued by ferry to Germany. This time we decided to explore the town a little more thoroughly, which turned out to be both interesting and enjoyable.

Trelleborg is located in south-west Skåne, just over 20 miles south-east of Malmö.

What can you do in Trelleborg?

So what can you do in Trelleborg? At this time of year, you can mainly enjoy the beautiful surroundings, but there are also plenty of activities and excursions to do. Here are our top tips.

1. Make a photo stop at the city's palm trees

Trelleborg is often called the 'City of Palms' and the palm tree avenue along Strandgatan is a popular photo stop in the summer. It was in 1984 that the first palm trees, from Alicante in Spain, were planted in the town. To cope with the winters, a palm house has been set up where the temperature is around 10 degrees, and in the spring the palms are brought out. In addition to the large palms along the avenue, there are a whole bunch of smaller palms in various locations around the city.

2. Exploring Trelleborgen

One of the most interesting things to do in Trelleborg is to explore "Trelleborgen". The castle you can see today is a reconstruction of a third of the Viking castle that existed on the site in the 10th century. The remains of the castle were only found in the 1980s, and the discovery was sensational. Among other things, it provided the answer to the riddle of the town's name. A 'trelleborg' in Danish is a ring castle, where the word 'trelle' refers to the slanting bars of split logs that support the palisade.

This was the first "trelleborg" to be found in Skåne and is today one of several known trelleborgs, most of which are in Denmark and another in Skåne. The castle at Trelleborg was about 140 metres in diameter, connected to the sea by a navigable river and crossed by four roads. The castle was part of the kingdom ruled by the powerful Viking king Harald Bluetooth.

In addition to the castle itself, there is a Viking museum, a recreated medieval house and a Viking farm with a period decorated longhouse. During the summer, many different activities are usually organised. When we were here, museums and the like were closed, but it was still possible to visit the castle. We could also look at all the frogs in the pond outside.

3. Stroll in the city park

Trelleborg city park is very nice. In the park there are two ponds, the so-called Svandammarna, and here it is really full of birds. We stood here for a long time and enjoyed the fantastic environment. The park also has chickens, peacocks, a playground, the sculpture Irrblosset by Axel Ebbe and the artwork "Creatures" by Ralf Borselius.

4. Visit museums in Trelleborg

There is a whole range of museums to discover in Trelleborg. When we were here, some were closed due to the pandemic, and some others had very limited opening hours. Some museums we think might be interesting are Stenbäck Aviation Museum, Trelleborg Museum, Trelleborg Maritime Museum and Axel Ebbe Art Gallery. Another museum that seems charming is the Borgquistska Hat Museum, which showcases a hat and cap shop that closed in 1978 and has been operating since 1866.

5. Admire the Church of St Nicholas

In the centre of Trelleborg is St. Nicoali Church, originally dedicated to St. Nicolaus, the saint of seafarers. It is not known exactly how old the church is, but the older parts probably date back to the 13th century. The church's current appearance was created in the 1880s. If you like churches, there are another 31 (!) to discover in the municipality.

6. Check out (or have a coffee at) the water tower.

The Trelleborg water tower was built in 1912 and designed by Ivar Tengbom. With its 58 metres, it is Trelleborg's tallest building and something of a landmark. Today, Vattentornet Café and Bistro is located on the ground floor, where you can stop for a meal or coffee.

7. Hang out at Gislöv's location

On the coast, just east of the centre of Trelleborg, you will find the location of Gislöv. This is a charming little harbour with small boats, a vintage jetty and a café. It's really nice to hang out here on a sunny summer day.

8. Take a trip to Smygehuk - Sweden's southernmost headland

Just over 14 kilometres southeast of central Trelleborg you'll find Smygehuk, the southernmost point in Sweden. Here you can take a photo at the viewpoint - 55 degrees 20 minutes 13 seconds. There is also a harbour, eateries, ice cream, craft shops and several works of art. Among other things, you can see Axel Ebbe's artwork "Famntaget", for which Uma Thurman's grandmother is said to have modelled.

9. Travel by ferry to Germany

The vast majority of our visits to Trelleborg have been to continue by ferry to Germany. Between Trelleborg and Rostock you can travel with StenaLine or TT-Line. TT-Line also runs from Trelleborg to Travemünde, as well as to Swinoujscie in Poland and Klaipeda in Lithuania. From spring 2023, you can also take the fast ferry FRS from Trelleborg to Sassnitz.
