Culture in Lund

I (Helena) grew up in Lund, so I have visited Kulturen many times. Among other things, I remember when there were medieval activities here and we got to sew our own medieval clothes. Very fun! But this is about 35 years ago ... so now it was time for a new visit!

Kulturen i Lund

Kulturen i Lund is located in the centre of Lund, right next to Lundagård, the University House and the Cathedral. The entrance is at Tegnérplatsen 6.

Visiting the culture in Lund

Since Kulturen i Lund is located in the centre of the city, it is very easy to get here if you are in Lund. It's actually quite incredible to find an open-air museum so central! You enter through the large white building, and then continue out the back to the southern and northern areas.

Just outside the entrance are some Scanian rune stones from around the year 1000. There is also Kulturens restaurant here.

Southern area: The vicarage and the community centre.

The southern area is the smaller of the two areas. It includes the Västra Vram vicarage and the large Allmogehallen. The vicarage was built in 1757 in Västra Vram outside of Kristianstad. The house was transferred to culture in 1927 and showcases a priest's house from the early 19th century.

This house was really beautifully decorated, with nice furniture and wallpaper. Those who were well off were not so badly off in those days!

Allmogehallen was built in 1853 as a stable and outbuilding for the two dwellings in the White House. Today, the building houses interiors from Scanian farmhouses, exhibitions and Kulturen's children's activities. Here we looked in on Aunt Green, Aunt Brown and Aunt Gredelin, at the temporary exhibition on Elsa Beskow's fairytale world.

Northern area: Bosebo church, Dean's house, crofts and sheds.

From the southern area you can continue to the northern area of Kulturen in Lund via a tunnel. This area is larger and has lots of buildings. Here you can see Boseby Church, among others. This wooden church comes from Boseby in Småland and was built in 1652 in horizontal timber, covered with shavings. The church hosts religious services, weddings, baptisms and concerts.

The Dean's House and Uranäsboden are also located here. This loft was built in the early 18th century on a farm in the village of Uranäs in Småland. The shed was used for storing food and tools, and in summer for overnight stays. But there were no high ceilings in there!

Another house with low ceilings was Onsjöstugan. This depicts life in an exceptional cottage in the 1850s. Gunhild and her deaf son Anders lived here as an "exception", after her husband passed away and the neighbours bought the cottage.

Northern area: Herrehuset, Borgarhuset, Berlingska huset and Thomanderska huset.

In the northern area there is also a whole series of high status houses. These include Herrehuset, which was built around 1816 and remains in its original location in the centre of Lund.

It also houses the Berlingska House, the Borgar House and the Thomander House. Berlingska huset was moved in 1911 from Lilla Gråbrödersgatan in Lund to Kulturen. It is Lund's oldest preserved half-timbered house and was probably built at the end of the 17th century.

The Thomander House is named after Professor Johan Henrik Thomander who lived here from 1833 to 1851. The house was moved from Paradisgatan to Kulturen in 1925, and there is now a reconstruction of Thomander's home with furniture and artefacts. Fantastic interiors!

Museums and exhibitions

There are also plenty of permanent and temporary exhibitions at Kulturen in Lund. We took a look at a permanent exhibition on the art of books.

We also checked out the permanent exhibition Metropolis - Lund in the Middle Ages. There are also permanent exhibitions on everything from fishing and toys to women's fashion and artefacts from concentration camps, which were collected when the white buses came to Lund in 1945.

We also visited the temporary exhibition on the circus. In addition to these, there is a whole range of other exhibitions. Although we spent a lot of time here, we were far from seeing everything. We really liked Kulturen - a very nice and interesting visit!

See more in the neighbourhood
