Photo challenge

It is the blogger Maria's Memoirs who launched the photo challenge, and she was inspired by the Lonely Planet's Instagram account.

How many different modes of transport have you managed to capture on film?

The challenge is about means of transport photographed while travelling, or perhaps at home? Of course, the exact number depends on how you choose to count, but that is perhaps less important. The most important thing is to look in the archives and find exciting and fun photos of transport. Here are our contributions. We have divided them into four categories

  1. On the road
  2. On the track
  3. In the air
  4. In the water

1. On the road

We start on the road, and of course we have to start with motorhomes. We have photographed so many different motorhomes, big and small, new and old, classic and creative. Here's a tiny selection, with our FREEDOM in the biggest picture.

We see ordinary cars all the time, of course, but we don't photograph them very often. Perhaps the camera mainly goes forward when we see slightly different cars. We have seen the most interesting cars in Malta!

Of course, we often see buses too, but they don't often make it into the picture. However, the amphibious bus in Stockholm is so special that it got its own post:

Mopeds and motorbikes are often seen, and in some countries they can be heavily loaded. The motorcycles in the big picture are from "Mälaren runt", taken at the start outside our marina.

In Asia you can also see mopeds with sidecars, tuktuks and - if you are in the Philippines - jeepneys. These vehicles are used as a kind of bus, and are an extension of the Willy's Jeep, a military vehicle that the Americans left behind in the country at the end of World War II. Today, the jeepney is produced entirely in the Philippines.

Of course there will be some bike photos in the collection too! You may recognise our electric bikes if you follow the blog. The big picture is from a bike taxi ride in Beijing many years ago.

2. On the track

Then it was time for transport that runs on tracks. We have the fewest photos of what we perhaps travel most often - the metro and commuter trains. Trains, on the other hand, are plentiful in the archives.

We also find some mixed images of trams.

3. in the air

It's time for air transport! We start with some different types of aeroplanes.

You see helicopters and hot air balloons from time to time. When that little "gyrocopter" came flying over our houseboat, we didn't even know what it was, but luckily there is always a reader who can tell us.

We also have to include some daring "means of transport". Cable car is perhaps not so daring really, but since I (Helena) think cable cars are scary, it is still counted there. That I did hang gliding was a bit surprising, right?

4. In the water

Finally, there will be photos of means of transport in the water. We start with various rubber boats and canoes.

We then continue with some miscellaneous motorised boats. In fact, I think I have thousands of photos of boats. This is a small, small selection.

Sailing can be an experience and these photos remind us of that. A few years ago we sailed with the school ship Gratia and this summer we sailed in Poland and Germany with a Bavaria C50. A fantastic experience!

Of course, we also have to include some photos of cruise ships and ferries. It's a bit of a mix.

Are there any other means of transport?

The only thing we haven't included now is animals, which can of course also be used as a means of transport. We end this post with some photos of animals that are sometimes used for travelling.

Which means of transport have you captured in the photo?
