Gamleby camping – KustCamp at Gamlebyviken

Updated: October 2026 | Gamleby camping, or KustCamp Gamleby, is located at Gamlebyviken in northern Småland, not far from Västervik. There are campsites, cabins and a sea bath with a sandy beach and lagoon. We visited the campsite with a camper in 2012 and found a nice spot high up with a lovely view of the water.

What we remember most from our visit to Gamleby camping is the water view and the peaceful atmosphere. The campsite is located on a sheltered bay of the Baltic Sea, surrounded by green nature. The area is partly hilly, which gave us the opportunity to stand a little higher up and look out over the bay.

When we were here it was a quiet period with few other guests on site. We spent the afternoon reading, enjoying the surroundings and just relaxing. A little more sun wouldn't have hurt, but it still felt luxurious to sit outside the camper with a view of the water. Towards evening we brought out the grill and cooked dinner.

We haven't returned to the campsite itself since then, but later visited Gamleby again to discover the imaginative trolls on Garpedansberget. More about them below!

Staying at KustCamp Gamleby

KustCamp Gamleby offers campsites for campers, caravans and tents as well as cabins in various sizes and with varying standards. There are also campsites with a lakeside location for those who would like a view of the water.

If you are coming with a camper, you should book a special camper pitch. These have electricity and a reinforced parking area that reduces the risk of getting stuck when the ground is wet. This is of course a practical detail, especially if you are traveling in spring or autumn.

The campsite has two service buildings, Sjöängen and Kullen, with toilets, showers and kitchens. The kitchens include a stove, oven, microwave and dishwasher. Sjöängen also has a washing machine and dryer, as well as a shared dining area with a view of Gamlebyviken.

There are also emptying facilities for loose containers and fixed tanks. Access to the service buildings is by code, and showers are subject to a fee.

Seaside resort with sandy beach and lagoon

Hammarsbadet is located next to the campsite and offers a small sandy beach, lagoon swimming and grassy areas where you can sit down. The location far inside Gamlebyviken provides a protected swimming environment.

For those who like to jump, there is a diving tower with ledges at different heights, up to ten meters. During high season, there is also a floating water slide.

We came here primarily for a quiet camping weekend. We didn't go swimming during our visit, but the proximity to the water was still a big part of the experience.

Activities, pool and restaurants

If you want to do more than just swim and relax, there are mini golf and volleyball facilities. The campsite also offers rental of kayaks, SUP boards, rowing boats and pedal boats, as well as a sauna cabin.

A more recent addition is the Solviken pool area, which welcomes both camping guests and day visitors. The pool area has a separate entrance fee and is open during the summer season. There is also a café, restaurant and bar.

Pelle's Tavern is another option for those who want to eat out. Restaurants, shops and activities have varying opening hours, so check the offerings before your visit – especially if you are coming outside the high season.

Discover the trolls in Gamleby

One excursion tip that we have tried ourselves is the sculpture park Garpes vänner on Garpedansberget. Here you will encounter trolls and other imaginative creatures that almost seem to have grown out of the forest.

We visited the trolls in 2023 and really enjoyed the combination of nature, art and fairy tale world. There are plenty of details to discover among the figures, and from the mountain you also get a nice view of Gamleby.

The walk is not long, but is on a forest path with a relatively steep uphill slope. Please bring shoes that work in the terrain.

More to see and do in the neighbourhood

From Gamleby you can continue to Västervik to walk through older neighborhoods and along the water. If you travel north, Valdemarsvik and Söderköping are other nice stops on your motorhome trip.
