Diving in Malta - a great experience

Diving in Malta at last! Peter got the chance to dive in Marsalforn in Gozo, Malta. He got to do a private dive with an instructor, as his diving licence is not yet complete. This dive in Malta was Peter's first open water dive - according to him very cool and a really good experience. Join us for scuba diving in Malta in text and pictures!

16-degree water

When it's 16 degrees in the water, it's not very warm ... The instructor had a dry suit, but you need a special course to dive with a dry suit and Peter hasn't taken that course. At least he got an extra thick wetsuit and then he took another wetsuit with short arms and legs on top of the other one. And he didn't actually freeze!

Good diving instructor

Peter did the dive with a company in Gozo called Calypso Diving Centre. We understand that there are many dive companies abroad (perhaps especially in Asia?) that are willing to compromise on things like safety to make money.

On the contrary, they seemed to be very carefully. There was a thorough briefing beforehand and all the rules and safety procedures were followed. Peter dived alone with the instructor, who made sure they were in good contact with each other at all times.

Diving in Malta - Amazing experience

What was it like? Well, I (Peter) will tell you myself. We were down for 42 minutes at a depth of nine metres and the first 15 minutes were spent finding a rhythm and balance. In one pool I had 4kg of weights to get the right balance and be able to lie still in the water.

Now I had a thicker wetsuit and in salt water you float more, so 14 kg weights were right for me in the end. We saw quite a few small fish and a ray. It was a great experience to be able to do this and I'm a bit lucky you could say.

Underwater photography and filming

The Nikon 360 camera can be used underwater down to 30 metres, but it was incredibly difficult to get good films and pictures (or maybe I haven't learned how to do it yet). It was possible to film, and most of the images in this post have been cut from the films.

However, the photos did not turn out as they usually do. There are other thicker lenses on the camera when you use it under water, which made it black between the pictures instead of merging. I do not complain about a camera that costs less than 5000 SEK and is fun in every way and easy to take with you. It was cool to be able to take the camera under water and we got to take photos home!
