Mikulov Castle and Central Europe's largest wine barrel

There are many fine castles and vineyards in the Czech Republic, especially south of Brno. We were here in July 2016, but decided to make a short visit again. Firstly, we wanted to check out some practical details for upcoming guided motorhome trips and secondly, we wanted to buy wine, of course.

From Český Krumlov to Brno

We drove from Český Krumlov  to Brnoand then southwards towards Mikulov. This is not really a long distance, but it still took four hours. In the Czech Republic, it happens from time to time that you encounter road construction with closed roads and then the GPS suddenly has to rethink ... In the end, we finally arrived!

City of Mikulov

First we drove to the charming little town of Mikulov. This town has not only a nice square and a lot of cosy cafes, but also a magnificent castle.

Mikulov Castle

The Swedes stayed here during the 30-year war in 1645 when they tried to take Brno. It did not go well and perhaps one of the reasons is in the castle.

Invite to a party

When Sweden and its 28 000 men were to playfully take Brno against a few thousand Czechs, they entrenched themselves around the wine regions outside Brno. The castle also contained Central Europe's largest wine barrel with over 100,000 litres of wine. It was empty when the Swedes left Mikulov so it was more party than war,
