Can you ski in Austria in winter 2020/2021? We attended an event last Thursday with information and inspiration from the Salzburgerland region of Austria. We tell you what we learnt - and show you pictures of lots of yummy Austrian treats!

Events with info and inspiration from Salzburgerland
So we were invited to an event in Stockholm, where the Salzburgerland region told us about the 2020/2021 winter season. In the photo you see representatives of different ski destinations in the region and the Swedish blogger Brinken bakes, who were there to showcase Austrian pastries and let us participate in a Mozartkule workshop.
Skiing in Austria 2020/2021 - what about COVID-19?
We have received information about what applies to covid-19 in Salzburgerland in the winter of 2020/2021. Swedish guests are now welcomed (no quarantine and no requirement for a negative corona test) and many measures have also been taken to reduce the spread of infection with e.g. distance in lift queues, hand sanitizer, disinfection of lifts and different evening activities. Currently, there is also a requirement to wear face masks indoors, e.g. in hotel lobbies, shops, restaurants (except at the table) and in public transport.
As the situation can change quickly, many hotels and establishments offer generous cancellation policies, allowing you to cancel at short notice without any reason and free of charge. However, please note that different rules apply in different places, so check carefully before booking!
Interesting destinations in Salzburgerland
The destinations we were told about in Salzburgerland were:
- Obertauern - with 26 lifts and great skiing.
- Salzburg Saalachtal - family-friendly ski resort
- Zell am See-Kaprun - beautiful at the Kitzsteinhorn glacier
- Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn - the ski resort with the long name, linking three villages.
- St John - family-friendly ski resort
- Wagrain-Kleinarl - family-friendly ski resort
To Salzburgerland by car, plane... or train
You can of course get to Salzburgerland by car, or you can fly to Salzburg. Another option, which was presented at the event, is to get to the ski destinations with the Snälltåget train. A new feature this year is that you can take the directly with Snälltåget to Austria. Trains run from Malmö for accommodation in weeks 6-9 and directly from Stockholm for accommodation in week 9. You book a whole compartment for up to 6 people.
Austrian pastries
During the event, we were treated to three Austrian pastries: apfelstrudel, sacher cake and another pastry that we can't remember the name of. All had been baked by the Swedish baking blogger Brinken bakar. This was accompanied by glühwein and then a white hot drink that was fruity. Need we say that it was delicious? Austria is not only skiing but also good food and drink!
Workshop - making white "Snömozart balls" á la Austria
Not only did we get to taste Austrian baked goods. We also got to try them ourselves! What were we going to make? Mozart balls in white snow, Salzburg style. We were first equipped with a tray of marzipan, nougat and plastic gloves.
They had to roll up balls, which were then dipped in white chocolate, and finally rolled in coconut. Peter and Maria, a journalist from the Swedish Tourist Journalists, went all in on the task.
How did we do it? No, but it wasn't that bad! Since we were already satisfied with sweets, we packed the little "snowballs" in bags and took them home. Nothing wrong with that doggy bag!

Ama de casa says:
We have skied in Austria many times and it is as beautiful and powerful as ever. Cosy too 🙂
But now I fear that the skis have been shelved after Anders broke his arm in the Sierra Nevada just before Coronan attacked. He was standing still on a children's slope when the hill attacked and his arm broke off at the shoulder.
We have to accept that we are not as sustainable as we used to be, and the leaks are not what they used to be.
Sad, but true.

Helena says:
Boring with arm breakage! Surely you get a little less durable over the years, even if it feels a little reluctant to admit it 😉.

Ditte says:
I used to visit Austria a lot and have travelled there many times. Even a lot to Salzburgerland. But now, if I go skiing abroad, I usually prefer France or Italy where it is "ski in ski out" and you do not have to take a cable car to get up. (Often the case in Austria)
But Austria is usually very cosy.
Do not know if the health allows skiing this winter but right now both that and the situation with Corona does not feel fun and also not to be limited by wearing a mask.

Helena says:
You have skied a lot and are really experienced when it comes to it! Of course it's a special year this year, and you should feel what feels good to do!

This event was a fun mix of business and pleasure. The Mozart balls must be a modern version of the "original".
Having lived in Munich for 6 years, I have often skied in Austria, including in St Anton and also Kaprun. Kaprun is Austria's finest ski area in my opinion.
10 October 2020 - 18:06
Helena says:
It was actually a really good event! Sometimes they "just" talk, haha, but here they had managed a nice balance between information and experience 🙂 Glad to hear that you like Kaprun as a ski area. We have been there in the summer, very nice!
