Film number 5 from the Philippines

Here is film number 5 from our trip to the Philippines. Don't miss it!

From Bohol to Cebu

So, how has our journey continued? Those of you who have been following us know that we spent a long time (2.5 months) in the Philippines. After we left the boat Dotche we travelled around the island Bohol, including Panglao. Some highlights included The chocolate hills and ghost animalsand the accommodation at Marina Point Bay Resort in Panglao.

After a while, it still felt like we were "done" with Bohol, so we took the ferry to Cebu, without having planned much more ...

Mactan Island off Cebu

Since it was the Easter weekend, it was quite difficult to find available hotel rooms, and we ended up with a room in a "city hotel" on the densely populated island of Mactan, where Lapu-Lapu City is located.

The island of Mactan is famous for being the place where the explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed in battle in 1521, by the Filipino leader named Lapu-Lapu.

This island is full of high-rise buildings and far from a holiday paradise, and we spent a few days here working on our computers and thinking about further plans. After all, we had more than two weeks left... so what would we do? In the meantime, there were a few visits to a Japanese restaurant (on Newtown Blvd) that became our favourite.

So good with edamame beans at the Japanese restaurant!

We also walked around a bit and checked out the area with brand new high-rise buildings, mixed with narrow alleys with simple homes and sheds. There are also beaches, although they are not the finest in the Philippines.

We have to show a picture of a small sari-sari (neighbourhood shop) we saw. It looked much the same as they usually do, with bars on the windows, products inside the bars and a small hatch. The difference with this one was that it happened to be behind a high fence with barbed wire. What to do? Well, here they had fixed a small box that can be sent up and down - with payment and products. It's all about finding solutions!

Here you can send money up in a small box - and what you have bought will be sent right down in the same box ...

Easter in the Philippines

The largest proportion of Filipinos are Catholics, and as we have seen in the past. Easter processions in Spain we were a bit curious how it could happen here. At the hotel they said that "it's mostly in the church", so we didn't expect anything ... but then we got to see a procession anyway. It was certainly not as grand as what we have seen in Spain, but it was long anyway ...

From Cebu to Palawan

Then it was time for us to fly to Palawan. Flying domestically in the Philippines does not cost much. We don't really remember what we paid for the tickets, but maybe 500 SEK per person. The flight felt modern and good in every way, and the only surprise was that it took off ten minutes before the scheduled time ...

The flight was only an hour long, so we didn't order anything to eat, but we had a look at the brochure. Some of you have reacted to the fact that there are large portions of rice in the Philippines, and this was no exception when it came to airplane food ...

Arriving in Palawan

Now we have arrived on the island of Palawan, which is well to the west of the rest of the Philippines.

What we have noticed so far is that the landscape is very different from what we have seen so far in the Philippines. The mountains are higher and much more dramatic (and sometimes fabulously beautiful) and the greenery is very dense.

Best this week

Best thing about this week? The fact that we got a lot of work done during our days on Mactan, and that we then took the plunge and travelled to Palawan.

Your turn ... what has been the best part of your week?

The week ahead

We will now explore the island of Palawan, and then we have (tried) to book a kind of "round trip" that will take us back to Cebu just in time for our flight home to Sweden. There will be a whole bunch of islands and a whole bunch of ferries. Don't miss following this!
