Different hotels in the world

Staying in a hotel with a difference adds something special to your trip. The accommodation becomes not only a place to relax and recuperate, but also an experience in itself. Today, there are many unique hotels around the world that stand out through their design, location, theme or something else entirely. Here are some distinctive hotels we've visited that have made an impact.

1. cave hotels in Turkey

A few years ago we visited Cappadocia in Turkey, which was an absolutely fantastic experience. Everything from the landscape to the hot air balloon ride was fabulous. In addition, we stayed in one of the most beautiful hotels we have ever experienced: Kayakapi Premium Caves. Here you live in caves carved out of the rock, but with all the modern services you could wish for.

2. lighthouses in Norway

A few years ago, we travelled in northern Norway, starting in Bodø. One night we stayed at Tranøy lighthouse, which is magically beautiful on the northern Norwegian coast. A dream come true! The place also offers very good food, and there's great art in the area.

3. Boat on land in South Africa

Can you really live on a boat in the South African semi-desert, far from the sea? We had to find out! And yes, Mount Noah Lodge offers accommodation in a bunch of boats that are now stable on land. Nearby are interesting experiences such as ostriches and huge stalactite caves.

4. Yurt in Mongolia

Many, many years ago we travelled on the Trans-Mongolian Railway from Moscow to Beijing in China, stopping in Mongolia on the way where we spent a night in a traditional yurt on the steppe. An amazing experience that also included horse riding, visits to temples and local food.

5. Prison hotels in Finland

Hotel Kakola is a modern and nicely renovated hotel in Turku, with nice rooms, good food and close to the spa and brewery. Things were different in the past, when this was one of Finland's most feared prisons. Many details from the prison era have been preserved and those who want to go "all in" can choose to stay in a room that looks like a cell.

6. Desert tents in Tunisia

Just outside Douz in Tunisia, at the gateway to the Sahara, you can stay in desert tents at the Abdelati. It is an absolutely magical experience to see the sunset here, and then the starry night sky. The experience is complete with bread baking by the fire, dinner in the desert and evening by the fire with music and singing.

7. library hotels in South Africa

Royal Hotel Bethulie is a unique little gem in the South African town of Bethulie. The owner, historian Anthony Hocking, is very knowledgeable about the Boer War and a great local guide. Moreover, his charming hotel is decorated with no less than 120,000 books.

8. Waterhole lodge in Zimbabwe

Have you ever dreamed of sitting in a hotel and looking straight out at a waterhole, where the wild elephants and buffalo come to drink? At the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge the dream can come true. Here you can also see vultures being fed, and rub shoulders with everything from mongooses to warthogs.

9. Caravan hotels in Germany

Pierdrei hotel Hafencity is a modern and trendy hotel with a good location in the centre of Hamburg. There are many different rooms as well as a rooftop bar, a cosy restaurant and rooms for children and teenagers. The best part is the possibility to check in at the "Campercity". On a roof, two floors up from the lobby, there are three caravans where you can book your accommodation.

10. Ecological jungle retreat in the Philippines

Located on the dramatically beautiful island of Palawan in the Philippines, the Atremaru Jungle Retreat. It is located in the centre of the rainforest, overlooking the South China Sea. During your ecological stay, you can enjoy the spa, rainwater pool and jungle walks, or take an excursion to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River UNESCO heritage site.
