Things to do in Järvsö – 10 attractions and experiences

Updated October 2026 | Järvsö is a small town in Hälsingland that surprises in many ways. Here we got a personal tour of a fantastic World Heritage Site, experienced nostalgic memories at Lill-Bab's museum and discovered that there is even an exclusive champagne bar in the middle of the countryside. Add beautiful mountains, nice hikes and a charming city center, and you will understand why we liked Järvsö so much.

Attractions in Järvsö – our best tips

Here are ten attractions and experiences that show how much small Järvsö actually has to offer.

1. Kristofersgården – a world heritage site we will never forget

One of our strongest experiences in Järvsö was the visit to Kristofersgården, one of the seven Hälsinge farms that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We had decided to visit all seven farms, but did not understand from the beginning what work it would entail. Several farms were privately owned, tours had to be booked and not all of them were able to receive us. It became a project that required about two weeks of work and cost a lot of money.

At Kristofersgården we were given a personal tour by the owner herself. This made the visit extra special, as we not only got to see the buildings but also hear about the history of the farm and life there. The farm is still an active farm and has belonged to the same family for fourteen generations. It is fascinating to think about how many people have lived and worked here over the centuries.

What impressed us most were the wonderfully well-preserved rooms and wall paintings. The Manor House features exotic motifs, including swaying palm trees and God's all-seeing eye, which looks down over the room. The artist Anders Ädel from Ljusdal created imaginative decorations, and it's easy to imagine how impressed the guests must have been when they came here to celebrate weddings and other big celebrations.

Kristofersgården is not an ordinary tourist attraction where you can just step in from the street. The farm is private and tours must be booked in advance. For us, it was one of the most memorable visits during our entire trip through Hälsingland.

2. Lill-Bab's museum – a nostalgic journey through Swedish music history

Another experience that made a strong impression on us was Lill-Babs museum. Barbro Svensson, who all of Sweden came to know as Lill-Babs, grew up in Järvsö and maintained a close relationship with her hometown throughout her life. For those of us who grew up with her music and performances, the visit was also a journey back to our own upbringing.

The museum wasn't very big when we visited, but there was a lot to discover. Here we saw stage costumes, photographs, paintings and personal items that told the story of her long career and life off the stage. It was special to get so close to the memories of an artist who was a natural part of Swedish entertainment for so many years.

Lill-Babs was also much more than an artist who happened to come from Järvsö. She was proud of her hometown and helped make the town famous throughout the country. Her grave is in the cemetery at Järvsö Church, which is also worth a visit.

Good to know: Since July 2025, Lill-Bab's museum has been located in new premises in Kvarnen at Stenegård. Our photographs are from our previous visit.

3. Stenegård – culture, crafts and Hälsinge traditions

Stenegård is one of the places you shouldn't miss in Järvsö. The large farm environment houses craft shops, gardens, cafes and various cultural activities. There is also a visitor center for the Hälsinge Farms World Heritage Site, where you can get information about the seven farms and how to visit them.

We particularly liked the authentic Hälsinge environment and the mix of history and businesses that are still alive. It is a place where you can stop for a while, browse the shops and discover local crafts. During the summer, various events and activities are also arranged.

Nowadays, Lill-Bab's museum is also located here, making Stenegård a natural starting point for anyone who wants to discover Järvsö's culture and history.

4. Järvsö heel – hike up to the beautiful view

Järvsö klack is one of the most obvious landmarks in the area, and of course we wanted to get to the top. The hike is about 1.4 kilometers long and goes up the mountain, so even though the distance is not very long, it can be nice to stop and catch your breath sometimes.

Once up there you are rewarded with a fantastic view of the rolling landscape, the forests and the Ljusnan valley. It is the kind of place where it is worth settling down for a while and just enjoying the surroundings. For us, the hike was one of the finest nature experiences in Järvsö. Please bring water and proper shoes. The surface and the climb make the walk feel more like a small mountain hike than a regular walk.

5. Järvsö Church and Kyrkön – history at Ljusnan

Järvsö Church is beautifully situated on Kyrkön in Ljusnan and is often described as Sweden's largest rural church. The current church was built between 1832 and 1838 on the site of an older medieval church. It is an impressive building, not least considering that it is located in a relatively small town.

The cemetery contains Lill-Bab's grave, which makes the place particularly significant for many who followed her life and career. There is also a nature trail around Kyrkön for those who want to combine a visit to the church with a walk in the beautiful surroundings. The church and the island give a different picture of Järvsö than the ski slopes and the fast-paced activities. Here, history, nature and tranquility take a slightly larger place.

6. The Wild Kingdom – meet the wild animals of the Nordic region

Vildriket, formerly known as Järvzoo, is one of Järvsö's most famous attractions. The zoo focuses on Nordic animals and includes bears, wolves, lynxes and wolverines. Long wooden walkways run through the forest area, making it possible to move between the animal enclosures.

The company also works with species conservation and knowledge about Nordic nature. This makes Vildriket more than just an ordinary zoo and an interesting destination for both families with children and nature enthusiasts. There is also Varghotellet, a unique accommodation where large windows face the wolf enclosure. It is an alternative for those who want to do something extra with their visit to Järvsö.

7. Järvsö Champagne bar – what do Paris, London and Järvsö have in common?

What would you expect to find in a small town in Hälsingland? Hälsinge farms, red cottages, forests and maybe a nice café. But an exclusive champagne bar with a connection to the world-famous French champagne house Taittinger? Hardly!

Yet Järvsö Champagnebar is located on the old Hälsinge farm Långhans. According to Destination Järvsö, it is one of only four official Taittinger bars in the world, and also the northernmost. Here you can try different champagnes together with local delicacies, cheeses, charcuterie and bread from the farm bakery.

And the story gets even better. The farm was previously home to Barbro ”Lill-Babs” Svensson, and her museum was once located in the same building where the champagne bar later opened. Through a connection to the Taittinger family, the business was able to start in 2019. Exactly how it all came about is a story that the owners are happy to tell on site.

The great thing is that you don't have to come in a tuxedo or evening dress. The idea here is that guests should just as easily show up after a bike ride or straight from the campsite. French prestige champagne in an old barn in the middle of Hälsingland – it's hard to imagine a more fun combination!

8. Järvsö Mountain Bike Park and Järvsöbacken – fast-paced adventures

Järvsö has become a popular destination for both cycling and skiing. In the summer, Järvsö Mountain Bike Park attracts visitors who want to cycle downhill on specially designed trails. There are courses with different levels of difficulty, from easier cycling to more advanced downhill skiing for those who really want speed and excitement.

During the winter, the area transforms into a popular ski destination with Järvsöbacken's slopes and lifts. But even in the summer, the mountain is worth a visit, not least for the fine view of Järvsö and the surrounding landscape.

We wanted to experience the view from Öjeberget ourselves and drove up Alpvägen to the parking lot near the top. There, of course, we did the only logical thing, we thought – we started walking even further uphill! After a while, we discovered that the viewpoint was actually in the other direction, behind the parking lot. All we had to do was turn around and follow the signs to Trappstigen.

Finally we found the right one and got to enjoy a lovely view of Järvsö. So our best advice is simple: When you get to the top parking lot, look for the signs for Trappstigen before you start trudging off. It can save you a few unnecessary altitude meters!

9. Järvsö city center – crêpes, ice cream and small-town charm

Järvsö is a small town, but we were surprised by how many nice restaurants, cafes and shops there are here. It is a charming environment to walk around in, with beautiful buildings and a selection that feels larger than you might expect.

We ate at the Crêperiet in the village, where we each ordered a delicious galette. One was filled with ham and the other with pork, and we both thought it was very tasty. A really nice lunch stop during our exploration.

We also took the opportunity to buy a soft ice cream each at Glasskupan. There are also more advanced ice cream creations here for those who want to treat themselves to something extra. The mix of small-scale eateries, nice surroundings and a relaxed atmosphere is one of the reasons why we enjoyed Järvsö so much.

10. Orbaden – swimming on the Hälsingland Riviera

It's not every day that you find a kilometer-long sandy beach in the middle of Hälsingland, but that's exactly what awaits you in Orbaden, a little south of Järvsö. The beach is beautifully located by Ljusnan, with forested mountains rising in the background. It has long been a popular excursion destination and is not called Hälsingland's Riviera without reason.

We visited Orbaden during our trip through Hälsingland and were impressed by the fantastically beautiful beach. Unfortunately it was a bit too cold to swim when we were here, but we could really imagine how wonderful it must be on a warm summer day. The long sandy beach has both shallow areas and plenty of space for bathers.

There is also Orbaden Spa & Resort and a campsite here, so it is great to stay longer than just a few hours. For us, Orbaden was yet another example of how many unexpected and beautiful places there are to discover in Hälsingland.

Where to stay in Järvsö?

Central Järvsö is best if you want restaurants, cafes and shops close at hand. At Järvsöbacken there are accommodations that are particularly well suited for skiing and cycling, including Bergshotellet. Another option is the historic Järvsöbaden, while the surrounding countryside is suitable for those looking for peace and nature.

Järvsö with a campervan

We traveled to Järvsö with our Freedom camper van and stayed at Järvsö Camping. It is a relatively small and nice campsite with a good location for discovering both the town and the surroundings. With a camper van it is also easy to make excursions to Hälsinge farms, viewpoints and other attractions in the area.
