When it was time to leave Sweden, we travelled Malmö-Świnoujście with Finnlines. This trip took a total of nine hours and we experienced a pleasant crossing with two meals, comfortable cabin and WiFi to work.

Malmö-Świnoujście with Finnlines
Finnlines' Malmö-Świnoujście route is relatively new. When the company upgraded on the Kapellskär-Åland-Naantali route, with the state-of-the-art star ships Finnsirius and Finncanopus they had the opportunity to expand, and in connection with this, the Malmö-Świnoujście line was added.

This new route was a perfect start to the our long journey through Europeand in co-operation with Finnlines we have now tested the trip. We travelled with the ship Finntrader, which of course cannot compare with Finnsirius or Finncanopus. This is not a ship you take for pleasure cruises, but a ship you take to arrive, but it can still be a nice trip.

Electricity for the motorhome
One thing we like on Finnlines ferries is that you can book electricity for the motorhome, at a cost of five euros. The advantage of this is that you don't have to turn off the fridge when you turn off the gas (which you always have to do on ferries for safety reasons). Turning off the fridge for 9-10 hours can, in the worst case, ruin the food in the fridge, so, it's perfect with electricity when travelling with a fully loaded fridge!

Cabin on board
The tour from Malmö leaves at 10:15 in the morning and arrives in Świnoujście at 19:00. It is of course not necessary to book a cabin on this tour, but it is very convenient to have a cabin! As soon as we got on board we settled in - a nice outside cabin with three beds.

Breakfast/brunch on board
We then went straight to the buffet where breakfast/brunch is served between 09:15 and 11:15. If you want to eat on board, a tip is to pre-book a meal package, which is significantly more affordable than buying the meals on site.
The first meal is quite basic (sausages, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs, white beans in tomato sauce, vegetables, bread, cold cuts, yoghurt etc) but we were very pleased and thought everything tasted really good. The bread was fresh and the boiled eggs were not grey, but perfectly cooked and slightly creamy.

Departure from Malmö
We managed to finish the first meal before it was time to leave harbour. In a way it was good, because it meant we had time to hang out on deck and watch as we left Malmö.

It was also really cool to stand on deck and watch as we passed under the Öresund Bridge. Mighty!

Hours on board - bar, cabin, WiFi
So how did we spend the hours on board? We bought WiFi (€12 for two devices), which allowed us to work all the way. Very convenient! How did the WiFi work? It wasn't as fast as at home, but "good enough" if you say so. We could work all the way without any major problems.

We spent some of the hours in the bar, where you can buy a drink if you want (or maybe a bun or a sandwich), and where there are also power sockets pretty much everywhere. We also spent a few hours in the cabin. We each took the opportunity to take a long, nice shower and we also dozed for a short while.

More services on board
There is also a (rather small) duty-free shop and a sauna on board. There is also a play area for smaller children.

Dinner on board
Dinner is served in the very last hour of the journey, between 18:00 and 19:00, in the same buffet restaurant as breakfast. When we were here, the menu included chicken, meat and fish, as well as rice, pasta, different types of potatoes and several types of vegetables and salads.
We chose the chicken and were pleasantly surprised. The chicken was very tender and the different varieties of vegetables were also excellent. Simply delicious!

Arrival in Świnoujście
Shortly after we finished dinner, it was time to slip into the harbour in Świnoujście. The goal of our Malmö-Świnoujście trip was mainly to arrive, but we still have to say that we had a nice day on board!

Yes, it will be really exciting! It's been a long time since we travelled in southern Europe!

That sounds like a good trip. The electricity and turning off the fridge was good that you reminded me. I think I've heard that you have to turn off the gas on board, but I forgot. Hmm, now all that remains is to check if the battery lasts for about 15 hours or if we have to have an empty fridge on our trip Gothenburg - Kiel this summer.

Yes, the fridge thing is good to think about! When we travel with Finnlines we usually book electricity. If we have to turn off the gas and don't have electricity, we usually try to travel with a fridge that is a little half-empty, and where we don't have such sensitive refrigerated goods.

We who live in Karlskrona have access to the Poland ferry and thus Europe is so much closer! (Not quite literally, but...) Worn out ferries are not my favourite, but taking the sea route is so incredibly practical. It's nice not to have to drive all the way down through Skåne and Denmark as well, though perhaps more practical if you're going to western Europe. It sounds like you had a great crossing. Hope this trip offers many wonderful adventures! Happy Easter to you too, Helena.

Perfect with a ferry connection to Poland! Of course, many of the ferries to the continent are a bit "half-boring", but we still like to go by ferry - it's easy and if you plan the trip well, it can be a pretty nice trip anyway. This time it was unusually good, we must say! Thanks, wish you a nice Easter too!

Fun with travelling, a bit of a shame that you are leaving Sweden which is entering its absolutely most delicious period.
But you get other things and it will be fun to follow

Sweden is beautiful in spring and summer! We've spent a lot of time in Sweden in recent years, so we're still looking forward to some variety. Happy Easter!!!

As you know, we like to go Gothenburg - Kiel when we go out in Europe. That ferry is quite nice compared to many others. When we are on our way home, it is often a ferry to southern Sweden and few can probably Finnlines to Malmö be a good alternative. Quite nice with a cabin even if the journey takes place during the day, just to be able to both shower and rest. Now have a really nice continued journey, we wish you who have just left the last mess for an Easter evening / night a bit outside Falköping.

The Gothenburg-Kiel ferry is nice, agree! Most ferries between southern Sweden and the continent are quite basic, focused on transport, but we like Finnlines. Cabin and WiFi of course makes it all a little nicer!

So perfect that you can get the electric car charged there. I guess that makes it a lot easier.
20 April 2025 - 5:09
Helena says:
We don't have an electric car, but when you switch off the RV's LPG (which you have to do on ferries for safety reasons) you need electricity for the fridge. The alternative is to more or less empty the fridge, but it is convenient with electricity!

Dan Söderlund says:
We travelled with the sister ferry from Malmö to Travemünde, on 5/4 -25. Also mainly satisfied, although the food was not great (but quite expensive).
If we had known that it was only a transport ferry, we would probably have booked a cabin too. There was not much to do. Between 11.30 - 18.00 everything was closed except the bar. .
But as I said, we were satisfied with the company and the trip as such. We paid about 980 kr for the crossing. Was lucky to book with a spring promotion.

Thanks for your comment! The ferries between southern Sweden and the continent are mostly transport, it's true, so if you want to have a good time it can help to plan a little ... 😉 The food on this type of ferry is usually quite basic. We were still satisfied on this trip, as we thought everything tasted good. Significantly better price for the meals if you book meal packages online!
