We set off on a little road trip, starting with Polferries to Poland, from Nynäshamn outside Stockholm. The advantage of taking the ferry from Nynäshamn is of course, if you live in Stockholm or in the north, that you do not have to drive all the way down to the ferries in the far south of Sweden. Just get on board in the evening and you'll be there the next morning.

FREEDOMtravel on an autumnal road trip
We planned this road trip early in the autumn, during the fair Scandinavian Caravan Show more specifically. Peter's brother Micke, who works with us at FREEDOMtravel, wanted to arrange meetings with some partners, while at the same time he wanted us to go on a trip together to talk and share experiences.
The journey goes through northern Poland and then through southern Sweden, and back to Stockholm. It will be a short week and we are travelling by car, as we have put the camper van in winter storage.
Polferries to Poland - from Nynäshamn to Gdansk
We started the trip with Polferries to Poland. The route goes from Nynäshamn, just outside Stockholm, and directly to Gdansk. It's quite a long journey (about 18 hours), but it's very convenient not to have to drive all the way down to Skåne. In addition, the timings make the journey comfortable.
You go on board in the early evening, so you can spend the evening in the restaurant and bar, and then you can sleep through the night. When you wake up in the morning, it's time for breakfast, perhaps some shopping in the store, and then some time on deck to watch the ship glide into Gdansk harbour.
On board Polferries M/F Wawel
We had preferred to travel with M/F Nova Star, which is Polferries newest and most modern ship. Now it was not so, but the trip went with M/F Wawel, which we travelled with several times before. This ship is also excellent to travel with, and on board there is a buffet restaurant, a lá carte restaurant, bar and shop.
You can buy WiFi on board if you want, but we did not, and I (Helena) took the opportunity to read a good book instead. Really nice to have time for that!
Evening in bar and restaurant
We started the evening by hanging out in the bar, where we each enjoyed a good Polish beer. Then it was dinner in the a lá carte restaurant for us. It is of course cheaper to eat in the buffet restaurant, where you find things like schnitzel, chicken and other simple dishes, but we wanted to enjoy the start of the trip and spend several hours with good food and drink. So it was the fine dining restaurant!
All three of us started with a creamy chanterelle soup, which was delicious. Then Micke chose beef fillet and Peter and I (Helena) chose a Polish dish that is a favourite for us: duck with red cabbage and apple, and it was just as good as it should be! The service in the restaurant was also super good, which contributed to a very nice evening.
Arriving with Polferries to Poland
The following morning we started with a really good and relaxed breakfast in the restaurant. Then it was only a few hours until we arrived in Gdansk, around 11:30 in the morning.
Museum of the Second World War
In Gdansk we drove directly to the Museum of the Second World War - a visit we had planned in advance. Polferries is an official partner of the museum and if you keep your boarding pass after the trip, you get a 20 per cent discount on admission to the museum. The discount is valid for 30 days after travelling with Polferries.
Wow, what an incredibly impressive museum! This architecturally unique and gigantic building tells the story of the Second World War in a completely new way.
The exhibitions are extremely attractive and modern, and you really feel the impact of wartime history. Perhaps it feels even stronger today, when we are once again living in a troubled and turbulent time. Don't miss this museum when you visit Gdansk!
A lovely day and evening in Gdansk
Gdansk is an amazing city, and we love coming here. When we first arrived in the city centre it was raining a bit, so we chose to spend an hour or so in the hotel before walking around the city. Then Gdansk was perhaps at its best! The air was almost mild and the beautiful buildings stood out majestically against the evening sky.
We walked through the beautiful neighbourhoods, along outdoor cafes and shops selling amber and other souvenirs. When we got hungry, we had dinner at the Goldwasser restaurant - cosy atmosphere, excellent service and very good food!
Hotel Celestin Residence in Gdansk
There are plenty of hotels to choose from in Gdansk, and we stayed at the Celestin Residence. This hotel has a great location for walking into the centre of Gdansk and great rooms, at a reasonable price. We were very happy with this hotel! This time we stayed only one night, and then the journey continued further ...

Ditte says:
Yes! Have travelled with them a long time ago. Nice that you were so happy with the trip.
Unfortunately, we were not. With the actual journey there. Then it was a rickety ship that was smoky and even though we booked "good" cabins high up in the ship, these were dull and stank of sewage. That it then blew 28m / sec did not make things better. Unfortunately poor food and service.
The strong wind made us several hours late in Gdansk. For me it was a flight home. Gdansk was in itself a very nice city and I have been here later, but have never again gone by boat from Nynäshamn (I am quite used to being on cruises even in bad weather).

BP says:
Polferries has really "spruced itself up", both in terms of the bar, the food and the cabin. It used to be a 90 per cent ferry for people who worked in Sweden.
The museum is a fantastic construction. So daring and so delicious - the building, that is.
Gdansk is a nice city, although I preferred Sopot.
