Today we went to the salt mine in Wieliczka in Poland. We were not completely alone, so to speak. A lot of queuing was part of the visit. First you had to queue to buy tickets, then to get in and last (but not least) to get out again. Despite this, it was a very interesting and fascinating visit. Join us at the Wieliczka salt mine in Poland!

From the Czech Republic to Poland
So we have moved on from the Czech Republic, where it was camping and bathingand arrived in Krakow, Poland. Here we managed to visit both the Wieliczka salt mine and the Old Town in the same day.
The Wieliczka salt mine in Poland
After 380 steps straight down, you reached the first floor at a depth of 64 metres. The tour then continued, with a female guide who resembled a Russian soldier, down to level 3 at a depth of 135 metres. You only got to see one per cent of the mine and yet we walked around for almost 2.5 hours. So the mine is absolutely huge!
Several amazing rooms, statues, paintings and even entire chapels are carved out of salt. The mine is impressive to see, but when hundreds of tourists queued for the two small shaft lifts out of the mine, it wasn't quite as much fun. One wonders how they have thought ...?

Enormous amount of food
The visit to the salt mine in Wieliczka took longer than expected and afterwards we were very hungry. Fittingly, we ended up in a restaurant with a bizarre amount of food. After sumptuous starters, huge plates of meat, sausages, duck (and a schnitzel as big as a pizza) as well as beer, wine, soft drinks and ice cream, the bill still only ended up at around 650 SEK for four people. At least it wasn't that expensive!
We only had a little time to walk around the Old Town, but we were keen to do some shopping. Tomorrow we plan that Peter and I will take our own little shopping trip while the boys stay in the motorhome and play computer or playstation ...
