Oxelösund is a great destination for those of us with a motorhome. There are several really good camping spots here, and the area also offers beautiful nature and an interesting attraction, in the form of Femörefortet.

Oxelösund – on the coast of Södermanland
Oxelösund offers proximity to both nature and the sea. It is perfect for making a short stop with the camper, and perhaps combine it with sun and swimming, walks in nature or a little history. For us, this was the second place we visited during this year's camper trip, after Nyköping.

Oxelösund is located on the coast in Södermanland, just over an hour south of Stockholm.
A nice evening at the campsite in Stenvikshamnen
We spent a very nice evening (and morning!) at Stenvikshamnen in Oxelösund. There is a simple parking area for motorhomes here, with four spaces. There is no service, except for regular garbage cans, but the price (2026 = 60 kronor/day) is easily justified by the peaceful environment and the fantastic view.

From the campsite you have a view of cliffs, piers and islands. If you walk a little further you reach a nice swimming spot.

We chose to spend Midsummer Eve here, and we couldn't have been more pleased. We celebrated the holiday alone, relatively simply, but it felt nice to celebrate right here.

It was a midsummer lunch with new potatoes, herring, pickled salmon, shrimp, egg halves, beer and nubbe.

At the same time, we could sit and watch all the small boats that trudged past, decorated with greenery and Swedish flags. Fantastically beautiful!

The evening offered beautiful light over the bay.

More parking spaces in Oxelösund
We liked the campsite at Stenvikshamnen, but we also like the large selection of campsites in the area, which means there are choices. In addition to the campsite in Stenvikshamnen, we looked into two others.
Femöre Guest Harbour is located at the farthest end and is more expensive, but on the other hand there is the possibility of having electricity connected. There is also a restaurant here.

Sunda-Ramdalshöjden is located very close to Stenvikshamnen, but ”on the other side”. If we understand it correctly, it is free to stand here for a day, and here too you have a nice view.

An excursion to Femörefortet
If you want to experience a bit of history nearby, it might be worth visiting the former top-secret Femörefortet, located at the far end of Femörehuvud. The fort, which is now a museum of the Cold War, is open during the summer and on special occasions.
We took a walk around the area during an October weekend many years ago, and the photos are from that occasion. Despite autumn, it was a real British summer and we had a very nice walk here.

Femörefortet is a giant nuclear-proof facility where 70 soldiers were to defend the Bråviken area against a major invasion across the Baltic Sea from the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. The fort was in use between 1966 and 2003.

Prefer camping? Discover Jogersö
Would you rather stay at a campsite? In Oxelösund there is Jogersö Camping, which we visited a few years ago. Our reflection at the time was that this is a very nice campsite with beautiful views and a nice beach. Please read about our visit to Jogersö camping and sea bathing..

More to see in the neighbourhood
There is of course more to see near Oxelösund, and here you will find more tips on nice places to visit:

Showing pictures creates memories from the military, I was involved in building such defenses on islands in the archipelago. We were stationed for 5 months, me and a friend. We drove the ferry (pontoon ferry, it was the end of the 60s) with all the trucks that were going out with material.

A few years ago we went on a guided tour of Femöresfortet, really interesting! We were staying in Nyköping at the time, but thanks for the tips on camping spots!

When I hear Oxelösund, I just think of SSAB and a ruined city center with modern houses. Cool about the five-hundred-dollar fort, didn't know about that.
Take care!

It's great that we could show a slightly different picture of Oxelösund then! 🙂 We haven't even been to the center, ... but on the coast and around Femöre it's very nice!

I always thought that Oxelösund is the little brother of the suburb of Nynäshamn... Wrong again!
But I still have to ask one thing – weren't you going to Norway? Then you're on the wrong side ;-)

It seems very nice there. It seems like a lot of people like those hoods. It's still uncharted territory for us. Thanks for the reminder!
