More people choose to treat themselves on vacation

Travel agency Ticket's latest survey shows that more and more people are choosing not to hold back during their vacation. Almost half (46 percent) are not planning any special measures to keep costs down at their destination, compared to 25 percent last year, while the economy still affects travel choices and how many people plan their vacation.

The survey shows that 32 percent say they choose destinations that are cheaper to fly to and 23 percent choose destinations based more on how cheap it is to stay there. Among those planning to keep costs down, certain strategies are more common than others:

  • Do nothing special to keep costs down (46 %)
  • Have a budget and sticks to it (19 %)
  • Cooking your own food instead of eating out (15 %)
  • Choose cheaper restaurants (12 %)
  • Bring snacks or food from accommodation to excursions (11 %)
  • Choose cheaper or fewer excursions and activities (10 %)
  • Bring your own things to the beach, such as umbrellas and chairs, instead of renting (9 %)
  • Drinking tap water instead of buying water (6 %)

These holiday behaviors bother Swedes

Although Swedes are known for being considerate and polite at home, their patience with other travelers seems to be dwindling on vacation. Now, a new survey by hotel and travel search site momondo shows what annoys Swedes the most when traveling abroad:

  1. Guests pushing their way to the front of the buffet line
  2. Guests who park sun loungers with towels for several hours
  3. Children running around and screaming in common areas
  4. Loud phone or video calls by the pool
  5. Guests who treat the hotel like a private party

Have you noticed our little AI travel planner that has appeared in the bottom right corner of the site? We haven't hit the big time yet, as the AI planner is still learning things, and may not be responding well enough yet. But we're working on it!

In addition to the planner having access to lots of general information, we are also inputting our best personal tips. Feel free to test it out for as long as you like and feel free to come back with feedback! But as I said, keep in mind that development is ongoing!

Reflection of the week

When it comes to keeping costs down, we probably do most of the things on the list. Since we travel as much as we do, it’s become a habit to cook our own meals, pack lunches and snacks, fill bottles with tap water (when possible), and so on… little things that make a difference in the long run.
