Åsa lives in Portugal with her husband Sverker and their children Frida and Jonna. On her blog Bortugal you can read about their everyday life, with school and surfing, in a small charming Portuguese village by the sea. Updated August 2026 | What to do in Caminha in northwestern Portugal? Caminha is a small, idyllic holiday town located two kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, close to the border with Spain. This town is actually so close to the Spanish border that we were able to get Spanish internet on our phones. We came here by camper van and explored the town for a day, combined with a relaxed stay at the Orbitur Caminha campsite.

Updated: August 2026 | Picos de Europa is a national park with several mountain ranges in northern Spain, located just inland from the coast between Santander and Gijón. The road in from the coast goes uphill, passing charming villages, small hotels and restaurants and pastures with cows, horses, sheep and goats. The mountains rise dizzyingly high into the sky and it is certainly fantastic to walk around here on a warm summer day.

We visited Zarautz by camper and stayed at the beautifully situated campsite above the beach. During our visit we had time to enjoy the beach life, walk around the town and experience a small part of the Basque coast.

Updated: September 2026 | Silver Coast, Cote d'Argent, stretches along the Atlantic coast in southwestern France and offers miles upon miles of sandy beaches, dunes and pine forests. We arrived here in a camper van in mid-December and had the huge beaches almost to ourselves. Beautiful, desolate and eventually a little more adventurous than we had imagined.

Updated: September 2026 | Île de Ré outside La Rochelle is a classic French holiday island with long sandy beaches, whitewashed houses, small ports, salt marshes and cycle paths. We arrived here in the middle of winter, when the boats were idle and the beaches were almost deserted. But it wasn't too hard to imagine how the island changes when summer arrives.

Here you can walk inside thick stone walls, look out over the fishing boats and stroll among old houses, restaurants and shops. We came here in the middle of winter and got to experience the historic town almost without other tourists.

Here, high cliffs meet the waves and winds of the Atlantic, and the feeling of being at the very end of the world is palpable.
