Welcome to Concarneau in France, in southern Brittany. In the heart of Concarneau you will find Ville Close, the fortified medieval town from the 14th century. This part of the town is built on a small island in the harbour, surrounded by massive ramparts. Coming here is like travelling far back in history.
Concarneau in France
From the harbour, a bridge leads to the old town on an island, which from the outside resembles a fortress with walls and a moat. If you have any imagination at all, it is not difficult to imagine this city in another era. Awesome!

City Close
Once the centre of shipbuilding, Ville Close is now a charming little neighbourhood and a tourist destination. Here you can stroll among beautiful houses and visit restaurants, cafés and shops. There is even a fishing museum here.
We can imagine that there are many tourists here in the summer, but in the middle of winter it is very quiet. Concarneau has the biggest festival in Brittany every year in August called Filets Bleus (festival of the blue nets) with traditional dresses and everything related to fishing. Concarneau is one of the largest fishing harbours in France.

The journey continues in France
We found a central motorhome site in Concarneau, from where you could easily walk to the town centre and Ville Close. It was free to park for the day, and we chose to stay for just a few hours while we visited the town.
Afterwards, we continued all the way out of Brittany and did not stop until Saint-Viaude, just south of the mouth of the river Loire into the Atlantic Ocean. We spent the night here on a pitch outside a sports centre, together with two other motorhomes.
Today we plan to continue southwards. We will probably stay for a longer time somewhere in the future, but right now we are slowly but surely trying to move towards a milder climate. I Brittany we had around 7 degrees during the day and a few plus degrees at night.

In New York, I could hardly even blog because I simply did not have time. Have a continued nice adventure.

Belfina says:
We continue to follow your journey, which has taken you to many of the same places we have travelled by motorhome, most recently Pointe du Raz and Concarneau. Now you are heading towards areas that we came to on our very first long motorhome trip. There are also many gems there. Ile de Ré has been mentioned by several people. There you can eat mussels and oysters, buy the island's own salt and cycle around the island. In Saint Emilión you can taste wine, we stayed at a France Passion farm. On the way into the real French Basque Country, you see even more windsurfers in Biarritz. In Espelette, on the way to the Pyrenees, pepper is grown and the buildings are similar to those in the Alps.
So nice in the December darkness to be with you. Have a nice trip!

Belfina, many thanks for all the tips! Great to hear from you who have travelled in the area. We have actually come to Ile de Re now! Have a little bad Internet here, but update when possible!
