Ida Marken and her family, husband and two young children, can be considered a real adventure family. By the time their son turned five, he had already travelled to Asia three times and Africa twice. However, the trip the family is about to embark on is unlike anything they have ever done before.
It is wonderful to fricamp in Sardinia! It's now five days since we filled and emptied the tanks in the car and charged electricity from a pole. The water in the tank is probably almost gone, the electricity in the car is ticking down and the car is full of things that need to be emptied: rubbish, waste water, toilet. Nevertheless, we decide to hitchhike one more night!

The last night on the island of La Maddalena, it was free camping in Sardinia. The main reason was financial. (We have budgeted 20 euros/night during our Euopa trip and now that we are approaching the high season, most campsites cost more.) Once we stood there, watching the sun sink into the horizon from our door, we realised that there are so many more reasons to free camp!

If you haven't seen the endless sea of motorhomes along the south coast of Portugal and Spain, it's hard to imagine the sheer number of vehicles. In every village and on every stretch of beach there are campsites, pitches and gravel plots with hundreds of motorhomes. It is an explosive development that has taken place and it can be positive both for us travellers and for the local economies, but then we motorhomers have to take our responsibility for how we park for the night.
