Fricamping in Europe - what applies?
The rules for free camping in Europe vary from country to country, and sometimes from region to region within a country. In some countries it is totally forbidden to spend the night in your motorhome outside campsites/pitches and in other countries it is allowed, but under certain conditions.
For specific rules country by country - see list below! Please note that in some cases the rules can be a bit fluid, and that what is tolerated can depend on the season, part of the country, your own behaviour, etc. In general, you can say that if If you are allowed to free camp or stay overnight in a camper van, the following conditions often apply for it to be accepted:
- Select car park, rest area or other place intended for motor vehicles, adjacent to a road.
- Do not drive off-road or in nature with motorised vehicles. It is usually forbidden, for good reason.
- Avoid protected areas such as nature reserves and beaches. It is usually not allowed to stay overnight there.
- Check the signs! Follow parking rules and do not stop if there is a no parking sign.
- Be extra careful in tourist areas. If it is crowded and there are a lot of tourists, fricamping can be accepted to a lesser extent.
- Avoid camping behaviour, i.e. don't unfold the awning and don't take out the outdoor furniture.
- Do not disturb or litter! It is obvious, really. If motorhomers misbehave, they will not be welcome.

How to find free campsites in Europe?
So if you want to free camp in Europe, how do you find free campsites? By far the most common - and perhaps easiest - way is to use the app Park4Night, which you can find wherever apps are available. Here, campers post places where they have stayed at night, or during the day, along with reviews.
There are lots of sites on the app - from day and overnight car parks of various kinds to regular pitches and campsites. The locations are labelled with different types of icons, along with reviews from different users. Please read the reviews, as together they often provide a good and informative picture. For example, you may want to find out whether the site is also suitable for a larger motorhome, or only for a smaller van.
If you're under the impression that all free camping sites are dreamy, beautiful destinations, it might be a good idea to lower your expectations and only free camp when you find these gems. There are stunningly beautiful sites, but the vast majority of sites highlighted in the app are pretty mediocre car parks.

Is it safe and secure to free camp in a motorhome?
We're sometimes asked about safety when it comes to free camping with a motorhome in Europe. Of course, it's not possible to say that it's always safe and secure, but our experience is that many places, especially in the countryside, feel very peaceful and safe. We've done a lot of caravanning and have no bad experiences regarding safety, but of course we think a bit before we park for the night. Here are some tips for safe travelling by motorhome:
- Choose rural locations, or in smaller villages. In the countryside, whatever the country, it is almost always peaceful and quiet.
- Alternatively: choose sites with several motorhomes. If you are free camping in a larger town, it may feel safe to stay in a place with several motorhomes.
- Avoid locations on major roads. It may be inappropriate to stay overnight so that the motorhome is visible from a major road.
- Read the reviews in the Park4Night app. You can find out how other users have experienced the location.
- Lock the motorhome and avoid leaving valuables lying around, right next to doors and windows. Extra alarms and locks are also available for those who want them.

What should you consider when travelling by camper van?
So what do you need to consider when travelling by motorhome in Europe? One important thing is to do not interfere. In some places, around Europe, local bans on free camping have emerged. This is almost always because local residents have been disturbed by the behaviour of free campers. So, don't let it happen!
Don't provoke by spreading out around the motorhome with outdoor furniture and gadgets. Do not be loud. Take care of nature. Do not litter.

What equipment do you need when travelling by camper van?
But in practical terms, what equipment do you need when you are free camping with a motorhome? Since you often have no services at all - electricity, water, toilets, showers, rubbish collection, grey and black water disposal or shops - you need to be prepared. Here are some tips:
- El - Make sure you have the electricity you need. This can help with solar cells and an inverter, which converts 12 volts to 220.
- Gasol - Make sure you have enough LPG, for example for the fridge and cooking. A solid LPG tank can help!
- Water - Make sure you have enough water in your campervan to last you for the duration of your camping trip.
- Food - Make sure you have enough food in your campervan to last you for the duration of your camping trip.
- Toilet - Make sure you have emptied the campervan toilet before you go free camping, so that you have a toilet. Alternatively, you can bring an extra toilet cassette.
- Waste management - Make sure you have emptied the rubbish before you go camping. You can also tie up rubbish bags and store them in the garage until you find a rubbish collection point.
- Do you fricassee when it's cold? - Make sure you can heat your motorhome, for example with a gas or diesel heater. It also helps to have good insulation and, for example, an insulating mat for the front windows.

Great information! We are thinking of skipping the tent next summer and sleeping in the car instead. Par4Night should be applicable even in such a case and thus be able to skip campsites?
