Life on board the sailing ship Gratia

Yesterday we spent a whole day on board the sailing ship Gratia, which belongs to the Swedish Cruise Club Sailing School Foundation. There were many hours out in the fresh sea air. We hoisted and salvaged sails, tied knots, cruised, pumped water with the bilge pumps, slept on deck and had fun with the crew over good food in the mess hall. Embarkation of the sailing ship Gratia

Yesterday it was time for us to join the sailing ship Gratia, a 30 metre long sailing ship from 1900. The ship belongs to the Swedish Cruise Club's Sailing School Foundation and we had the chance to try out a sailing course over a weekend. Laura Dekker was only 14 years old when she sailed around the world alone. Elizabeth Tyler was much older when she challenged herself and, after the sudden death of her husband, decided to single-handedly continue sailing the sailboat that her husband had mainly managed. Guest of the week: Mads Poulsen and Lotta Logård, Round-the-world sailors.

In May this year, Mads Poulsen and Lotta Logård left Stockholm in their sailboat S/Y Looma IV to embark on their longest ever sailing trip. In fact, we attended their farewell party held here in Pampas marina, where we live. Mads has lived in a houseboat here before and the last time before departure they had their nice sailboat lying right here. One early morning (so early that we didn't have time to wake up and wave) they glided past our houseboat and out towards the open waters.

Guest of the week: Ann-Sofie and Jonas on S/Y Lady Annila, long-distance sailors.

Ann-Sofie and Jonas have both been sailing most of their lives and six years ago they left Sweden for the longest sailing trip ever. During this time they have mainly sailed in the Mediterranean, but they have also travelled all the way to the Caribbean on their boat S/Y Lady Annila. Now a new era in the couple's life is about to begin, with permanent residence in Portugal.

In 2010, Linda and Ludvig Hammarberg embarked on a four-year voyage around the world with their children Lovis and Otto, then aged 4 and 2. With the 40-foot-long sailing boat S/Y Mary, they sailed across the world's oceans and visited lots of exotic places in Africa, Southeast Asia, Polynesia and the Caribbean.
