Writer: Helena Bergström

Updated: October 2026 | Vete-Katten on Kungsgatan is a classic patisserie in Stockholm, dating back to 1928. Here, both the pastries and the homely coffee rooms attract, where it feels a bit like stepping into someone's grandmother's house. We have returned from time to time over the years, for a coffee or an informal meeting in a cozy corner.

The Wheat Cat on Kungsgatan in Stockholm

Vete-Katten is located in the heart of central Stockholm, on Kungsgatan 55. From the outside it may look like just another pastry shop, but when you step inside you discover that the premises consist of several rooms with different characters.

I, Helena, remember going here when I was a student. Since then, we have visited more often, and even though we don't eat here very often, it's a place we like to return to.

For us, it is above all the combination of a real pastry shop and the cozy rooms that make Vete-Katten special. Here you can sit down with coffee and something delicious, and take a break from the city outside.

Vete-Katten at Kungsgatan 55 has almost "always" existed and is perhaps the best in town.

A pastry shop dating back to 1928

Vete-Katten was founded in 1928 by Ester Nordhammar. She was 42 years old at the time and had no previous experience in pastry making, but wanted to create a simple pastry shop where everyone would feel welcome.

In Vete-Katten's own history, the environment is described as "decorated like a priest's home." That's a pretty apt description, although I tend to think of it more like someone's grandmother's home.

The name also has its own little story. According to the story, Ester replied ”Yes, the wheat cat” when she was asked what the pastry shop should be called. And so it became the Wheat Cat!

Over the years, the business has had several owners, but the classic patisserie on Kungsgatan remains. Writing the founding year feels almost more appropriate than counting the age – this is a place where history is part of the experience.

Don't miss the coffee rooms further in

Our best tip is to continue further into the premises. The front café area is of course also good for a coffee, but it is in the back coffee rooms that we think the special feeling is found.

When we visited in 2018, the ornate tables were set close together, with lace tablecloths, paintings and trinkets adding to the homely atmosphere. It was easy to see why people were happy to settle in for a while.

We have also suggested Vete-Katten when we wanted to meet, for example, a journalist or a partner for an informal meeting. It's nice to find your own corner and talk over a cup of coffee. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that.

Our coffee at Vete-Katten

One autumn day in 2018, we took the opportunity to visit our own city. After sightseeing and a visit to a museum, it was time for a coffee break, and we chose Vete-Katten.

We had to queue for a while, which gave us time to look at the buns and pastries and try to make up our minds. Not easy when there is so much to choose from!

Peter chose a piece of princess cake and I had a pastry called ”Smultron”. Both were very good. We rarely have coffee, so when we do we think it’s nice to choose something that feels a little extra.

The photos in this report are from that visit. We've been back a few times since then, but the memory of that particular coffee break fits in nicely with what we like about the place: the pastries, the coffee rooms, and the feeling of taking a proper break.

What can you eat at Vete-Katten?

Vete-Katten is primarily a pastry shop and bakery. It offers buns, pastries, cakes, cookies and bread, both for those who want to sit down and for those who want to buy something to take home.

There are also sandwiches, salads and hot lunch dishes, so you don't have to be craving something sweet to come here.

We have usually gone here for coffee, and that is also when we think the environment comes into its own. A cup of coffee, something delicious from the pastry counter and a moment in one of the coffee rooms is a nice combination.

The Wheat Cat is also available at Centralen

There are several Vete-Katten in Stockholm. One branch is located in the northern hall of Central Station and can be handy if you want to buy something for a train journey or a visit to someone.

I've also bought some pastries there once. But when we talk about going to Vete-Katten to settle down in the cozy coffee rooms, we mean the original patisserie on Kungsgatan.

More to experience in Stockholm

A coffee break at Vete-Katten is easy to combine with a walk, shopping or a museum visit in central Stockholm. We ourselves think it's fun to sometimes be tourists in our own country – and a coffee break is always a good idea. Have you been to Vete-Katten? What do you usually choose from the pastry counter?
