Öster Malma Castle
Öster Malma Castle as an estate dates back to the 16th century, and the baroque castle you can see today was built in the 17th century.
You can come here for food, conferences or parties, but a lot is also about animals, nature and wildlife conservation. The first thing we saw when we arrived was a "hotel for beetles".
Öster Malma Castle is located about 20 miles north of Nyköping and belongs to Nyköping municipality. The castle is about 9 kilometres southwest of Stockholm.
Baroque castle with a focus on hunting and game management
The main building at Öster Malma was built in the 16th century and today, 350 years later, the baroque castle is still a beautiful building.
In the 18th century, under the supervision of Ulrika Eleonora Ridderstolpe, the rounded wings were built. This period also saw the addition of parks and flowering terraces down to Lake Malma, as well as wallpaper with hunting motifs in the Great Hall.
Hunting has always been important at Öster Malma Castle and in the 1940s the Swedish Hunters' Association began leasing the estate for training in hunting and game management. In the 1990s they took over the estate, and the focus on hunting and game is now very clear.
Wildlife Park
At Öster Malma you will find the "Wildlife Park" which shows Swedish wild animals in a natural environment. Opening hours vary throughout the year and tickets are purchased in the farm shop. Just watch out for the aggressive wolf just outside ...!
Wildlife conservation trail at Öster Malma Castle
We took a walk along the small Viltvårdsstigen, which is just over a kilometre long. Along the path we found several signs telling us about moose, red foxes, badgers and various birds.
There were also several large enclosures where animals roam at certain times of the year, but on most of them we saw signs saying that the enclosures were currently empty.
Although we didn't see many animals, we were fascinated by all the huge old trees with imaginative shapes.
Restaurant and shop with game meat
When we visited Öster Malma Castle a few weeks ago, both the restaurant and the farm shop were open.
The restaurant served a buffet with game meat and a lot of other goodies. The price suited a festive occasion rather than a spontaneous lunch, but can certainly be very tasty and pleasant. We understood that they usually serve many different kinds of buffets here, such as summer buffet, student buffet, game Friday and so on.
Instead, we took the opportunity to browse in the cosy little farm shop. Here you could find all sorts of delicacies including (of course!) different kinds of game meat.

We were there on a unit meeting with the job some years ago. Above all, I remember that we got to try shooting clay pigeons (I had never done before, but followed the instructor's advice and shot down 4 of 5🙂). Another activity was pistol shooting, oh what a recoil it was! Those who did not want to try shooting had to go for a moose walk. The wallpapers inside the house were dark and there were many animals on them. Not very clear memories of the food unfortunately.

But how nice that you have been here! And what a clay pigeon shooter you seem to be! 🙂

Very interesting
I knew the people who managed the property in the early 1900s and 2000s, so I've heard a lot about the property, but haven't visited it, so this was particularly interesting to me.
Take care!
