Tisá i Tjeckien - inspelningsplats för Narnia

Tisá in the Czech Republic is an area of stunning rock formations, Tiské stěny, in the north of the country. Scenes from 'The Chronicles of Narnia' were filmed here, and it's not hard to see why. This is truly a fairytale landscape!

Tisá in the Czech Republic

Tisá and Tiské stěny in the Czech Republic are well worth a visit. The dramatic rock formations are densely packed and can be reached almost immediately after passing the entrance.

Tisá is located in the Boheman Switzerland nature reserve, in the northern part of the Czech Republic, about 10 kilometres northwest of the capital city of Prague.

Tea and filming for Narnia!

'The Chronicles of Narnia' consists of seven books by author C.S. Lewis, three of which have been made into films:

The witch and the lion (2005)
Prince Caspian (2008)
King Caspian and the ship Dawn (2010)

If you've seen the films, you may remember a scene in the first film where Lucy is led through a snowy landscape to Mr Tumnus' house. That scene was shot here, at Tiské stěny in Tisá. Even more scenes from Narnia are filmed elsewhere in Bohemian Switzerland, including at the sandstone arch Pravčická brána.

Car journey from Kemp Děčín

We made the trip to Tisá and Tiské stěny as an excursion from the Kemp Děčín campsite. We left the campervan at the campsite and got a lift by car. On the way, the campsite picked up two scooters (non-electric scooters), which we would then use to get back. Another option is of course to take your own car or campervan all the way to Tisá.

Walking around Tiské stěny in Tisá

If we understand it correctly, there are two entrances, and we entered right at the inn (Turistická chata Tisá). From here it was only a short walk before all the rock formations started to appear. Normally you pay a small fee when you enter (a few euros per person), but when we were here the cash register was closed for some reason.

There are signs indicating different lengths of hikes. The campsite advised us to first walk "up the hill" away, then turn round and walk "down the valley" back, so this is what we did.

We found the hike to be relatively easy. There are indeed steep stairs here and there, but in several cases it is to get "extra views", which means that you can skip some of the stairs if you wish. Mostly we walked on more or less flat ground, without too much inclination. Note, however, that there are steep drops here and there, sometimes without railings.

Hiking in Tisá - at altitude

We started by hiking away, up the hill. Here you can see the dramatic formations rising everywhere, while at the same time you have a clear view of the landscape. fantastic views of the area below, with nature and buildings.

There was a bit of a breeze at the top, which was nice in the heat.

What a feeling of freedom up here! We were also here on a Monday, so it wasn't very crowded.

The rock formations are fabulous to say the least, with high narrow peaks, steep cliffs and narrow passages.

Hiking in Tisá - in the valley

After walking "on the hill" we turned around and walked back down the valley. This way you get to see the rock formations from below, and can look up at them.

Of course we wanted to take a selfie in this amazing place! We had no tripod or selfie stick with us, so the rocks served as "mobile phone holders", while we set the camera to "10 seconds".

We have seen many amazing mountain areas in the Czech Republic, but this was one of the favourites, along with Adršpach Rockswhich we visited in 2017.

When you walk down the valley, you can pretty much walk straight ahead, on level ground, but all the stairs and caves invite you to explore ...

In some of the formations, you think you see old men or animals ...

So, what do you say? Although we show many photos, this is only a small fraction of all the photos we took. A magical place!

We highly recommend a hike here! Remember good shoes, water to drink and maybe some snacks!

Scooter back to the campsite

We would have liked to have lunch at the inn, but unfortunately it was closed when we were here. Luckily we had some chocolate with us, so we had energy for the return journey!

In the Czech Republic love they have their scooters (scooters), which are very common for excursions and activities. We're not quite as fond of this vehicle, but when it's downhill it's relatively easy.

From Tiské stěny to Kemp Děčín it was indeed very downhill. However, we felt that the tour took its toll. Sometimes it was really steep, and then you have to brake and concentrate. At the end there was also an uphill climb.

Above all, it was quite a long scooter ride, about 18 kilometres or more. All in all, however, it was an absolutely fantastic excursion, which ended with a late and delicious lunch in Děčín.

Bohemian Switzerland is a fantastic natural area in the Czech Republic. Besides Tisá, we can recommend a nice hike in Bohemian Switzerland, as well as the sandstone arch Pravčická brána. From the Czech Republic, you can also take a trip to the German side, where the nature area is called Saxon Switzerland.

Level of difficulty: The rock formations are almost directly accessible and the walk can be relatively easy. You can avoid some stairs, or walk a short distance and then turn round. Note that there are cliffs without handrails in some places.

Tiské stëiny is fantastic. I am so glad to have been there before my legs started to fail me. The Czech Republic has so many exciting places to visit and experience, exactly what you have done. Unfortunately, we arrived in the country a little too late, as it usually requires good leg strength and energy. So fun to follow you and see photos from places we have been to. We experienced that the Czech Republic has nice little roads that are paved and you get to see so much more.

  Remember that you have been here too, fun! A fantastic place! Agree with you that the Czech Republic has a lot to offer! Also agree more that it sometimes requires some fitness to cope. Right here we thought that you could perhaps choose a slightly shorter distance if you wanted to (but perhaps wondering if we took different entrances, do not recognise the entrance in your photos).

Strange about these funny scooters. It is the first time I saw them when you showed them in a post a few weeks ago and now.

  Isn't the landscape fantastic? We are happy to be ambassadors for this country 🙂 However, maybe we should not be ambassadors for scooters, haha. Agree, have not seen these scooters in Sweden, as far as I know. In the Czech Republic, they are both common and popular, often found at activity centres, rental places and the like.
