It was my 50th birthday the day before yesterday (how time flies!) and we celebrated this special day together at Saint-Aygulf on the French Riviera, with camping and a restaurant dinner. A fantastic day!

Saint-Aygulf Plage on the French Riviera

So we have left the fantastic natural area Ardèche and made our way down to the French Riviera. French Riviera, or French Riviera as it is called in French, is a term that describes the French Mediterranean coast, from the Italian border in the east to Toulon in the west. When it was time to celebrate my 50th birthday, we headed to Saint-Aygulf Plage, near the towns of Frejus and Saint-Raphaël.

Camping Saint-Aygulf Plage

We went to the campsite Saint-Aygulf Plage, which is right next to the beach. During this trip we've been free camping a lot (except when we've had guests in the motorhome), but when it's as hot as it is now, we value both shady spots and access to electricity, so we can use our portable AC.

It is still mid-season on most campsites in France, and this lasts roughly until 5 July, when the summer holidays begin for most French children. So far, prices are still ok on campsites, and at this campsite we paid 29 euros per night, including electricity.

The campsite is pleasant with nice pitches, and access to both beach and swimming pool. There is also a large camping shop, a bakery and an activity programme.

A quiet day in the shade ...

On my 50th birthday, it was mainly a quiet day in the shade. We did some work at the computers, and then tried both the beach and the pool.

We also went for a short walk and looked at the surroundings, which offers a smaller area with restaurants, cafes and some smaller shops. We had an ice cream and a new summer dress (not pictured), which became a spontaneous 50th birthday present.

Dinner at Le Palma Plage Saint-Aygulf restaurant

In the evening we went out to eat in a restaurant, to celebrate. We are travelling for a long time and have a limited budget, so restaurant visits are not common for us, especially in the evenings. Therefore, this felt luxurious! We researched in advance and chose a restaurant that has both a cosy waterfront location and looked to have good food: Le Palma Plage Saint-Aygulf.

To start, we chose to share a "Mediterranean tapas". Little did we realise that this meant deep-fried squid rings, but they were very good so we were very pleased.

For the main course, we chose tuna, cooked with a Japanese twist. This really appealed to us. Very, very good! Then we finished the meal with a coffee drink each. Peter had an "Irish Coffee" and I chose a "French Coffee", which in this restaurant meant about the same as an Irish Coffee, but with brandy instead of whiskey. Very good!

Thank you for all the congratulations!

I would like to thank you once again for all the congratulations I received during the day, and even afterwards! It was a marvellous day and I could not have wished for anything better.
