Updated: October 2026 | The High Coast Bridge is an impressive landmark over the Ångermanälven River. If you drive along the E4 through the High Coast, you will pass over the bridge, but it is also worth stopping to enjoy the view. On Hornöberget at the northern bridgehead there is a rest area with a view of the bridge and the river, along with a restaurant, café and shop.

ShareThe first time we wrote about the High Coast Bridge, we had just driven over it. Since then, we have returned to the area several times and even stopped at the lookout point. The bridge looks good from the car window, but when you step out and see the entire span over the water, you get a different perspective on the structure.

Stop at the High Coast Bridge on Hornöberget.
At the northern end of the bridge are Hornöberget and Hotell Höga Kusten. Here you can take a break on your journey and at the same time get a view of the Högakusten Bridge and the Ångermanälven River. We have stopped here ourselves during recent visits to the area. It is a convenient stop when you are still traveling along the E4, and an opportunity to photograph the bridge without having to capture it on the fly.
From this side you can see how the bridge stretches over the river, with the tall pylons and cables supporting the roadway. It is easy to understand why the bridge has become such a well-known motif from the High Coast. The area also has a playground and walking opportunities for those who want to stay a little longer.
Restaurant and café with a view
Hotell Höga Kusten has a restaurant and café. The restaurant's panoramic windows face the bridge and the Ångermanälven, so you can enjoy the view even during your meal.
Here you can stop for food or coffee. The hotel describes a kitchen with a focus on local ingredients, and the café offers sandwiches and coffee bread, among other things. Check the current menus and opening hours on the Hotell Höga Kusten website before your visit.
Skare shop & foundry
Next to the hotel is Skare butik & stöperi. Candles are made here, and the shop sells both their own candles and a range of interior design, ceramics and jewellery. It may be worth setting aside some time to stop by if you like crafts and shops. Skare states that the business is open year-round, but opening hours vary.
Facts about the High Coast Bridge
The Högakustenbron is a suspension bridge over the Ångermanälven River, near the river's mouth. The bridge connects the municipalities of Härnösand and Kramfors and is part of the E4. Construction began in 1993 and the bridge was inaugurated on 1 December 1997 by Carl XVI Gustaf. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was a model.

The free main span is Sweden's longest bridge span. This refers to the distance between the pylons, where the bridge spans the river without intermediate supports.
This is where the High Coastal Trail begins.
Hornöberget is also the start of the Höga Kustenleden trail. The first stage goes to Lövvik and passes under the Högakusten Bridge, among other things. The entire first stage is listed as 11 kilometers and is classified as difficult. It is therefore a longer hike to plan for, rather than a short leg stretch during a rest stop.

More to see and do in the neighbourhood
The High Coast Bridge is a great stop on the way to more experiences in the area. We have returned to the High Coast several times and have collected our tips in a larger guide.
On the south side of the bridge there is Snibbens camping, which we have visited. You can also continue to Härnösand or take a trip to Nordingrå and the special open-air museum memories of man.

Good to know before your stop
- Find here: The viewpoint at Hotell Höga Kusten is located on Hornöberget, at the northern abutment of the Höga Kusten Bridge. Follow the signs from the E4 towards the hotel.
- Parking: There is parking in the area. Check the signage for conditions and possible fees, especially if you intend to leave your car for a longer period of time.
- Food and coffee: There is a restaurant and café at Hotell Höga Kusten. Check current opening hours before your visit.
- Shop: Skare shop & stöperi is located next to the hotel and has its own opening hours.
- Hiking: The High Coast Trail starts at Hornöberget. Choose the route according to how much time you have and use the current map.
For us, the High Coast Bridge has gone from being something we pass by to a place we like to stop at. A break with a view of the bridge and the river is a nice addition to the journey through the High Coast.
