Bergamo in Italy - A charming city

The city of Bergamo and its capital Bergamo is located in the region of Lombardy, about 4 miles northeast of Milan. This is a really nice little town, which we immediately fell in love with. We were perhaps a little disappointed with Milan, which felt a little impersonal and expensive, but instead it was Bergamo that surprised us positively.

Founded in 49 BC, Bergamo has many attractions to show off, and you enter Bergamo in the low-rise town of Sitta Bassa, which is mostly made up of apartments and shopping centres.

Citta Alta

We make our way up to the beautiful Citta Alta, the upper and original town. As this is the old town, it is filled with charming old alleys and great views. You take the cable car or funicular as it is called or the walking path.

Here you can visit Alta and see the Cattedrale di Bergamo Battistero or the Basilica di Santa Maria. If you just want to soak up the crowds, have a coffee in Piazza Vecchia or a really good salad, with breasola and chevre, on an outdoor terrace.

City with mountain railway

To get to Citta Alta you take the cable car from the lower and more modern town, Citta Bassa. We took the cable car in both directions. In Bergamo, Italy there is also the airport Orio Al Serio for those who are keen on a weekend with cheap Ryan Air.

Searching in vain for a pitch

When we arrived in Bergamo, we parked the motorhome in a regular car park and set off to explore the city. Afterwards we tried to find one of the two pitches that the Bordatlas says are in Bergamo, but we couldn't find either of them ...

Instead, we started driving towards Lago d'Iseo. There it turned out that all campsites were occupied! It was getting late to look for more, so it will simply be a night in a car park. At least we won't be alone, because two caravans have parked right in front.
