Venice is built on stilts in a lagoon. There are bridges around all the small islands, or you can take a Vaporetto (bus boat) or gondola around the canals to get to the Rialto Bridge, St Mark's Square and other sights. Squares, churches and alleys galore and the Doge's Palace in its pride and joy. cruise the canals of the lagoon and discover Venice!

Charming neighbourhood

Gliding around by boat among the old houses is fascinating and it is not difficult to imagine what life might have been like here hundreds, or even thousands, of years ago. The entrances of the houses face directly onto the water and you can see boats mooring in front of the front doors for people to enter.

The Doge's Palace

We visited the Doge's Palace (from where the Doges ruled Venice) and walked through one more amazing room than another. However, down in the dungeons (where, among others, Casanova was held for 15 months before escaping), it doesn't seem to have been as pleasant ...

There was of course also some shopping, fast food from the stalls and ice cream. However, we skipped eating an outrageously expensive, but boring, dinner this time ...

Tips for visiting Venice

We have now visited Venice a total of three times. Here are our top tips for those who are also planning to visit Venice:

  1. Use vaporetto (the local boats) to get around - it's convenient and the cost is reasonable.
  2. Take a gondola ride if you absolutely want to, but be prepared for it to be quite expensive (and possibly not as romantic as you thought).
  3. Don't miss St Mark's Square, but feel free to skip drinking your coffee there if you don't want to spend a fortune!
  4. Don't miss the Doge's Palace - one of the more interesting sights!
  5. St Mark's Church is powerful but the queues can be murderously long - try to arrive early, in low season or opt for a guided tour that takes you past the queue.
  6. Be prepared for the food to be expensive and in some cases a bit 'touristy'.
  7. If you're desperately hungry and want something on the go, there are plenty of stalls selling pizza slices and tasty sandwiches and other items.
  8. Don't miss the Italian ice cream - amazingly good!
  9. Stay in a small hotel in the narrow streets in the centre of Venice - cosy!
  10. If you are coming by campervan - stay at one of the campsites outside and take a bus the rest of the way.

Camping Rialto

There are several campsites located just outside Venice. This time we stayed at Camping Rialto, a simple campsite on Via Orlanda. There are service buildings and everything you need, including WiFi, but don't expect luxury. Buses to Venice run just outside and the campsite offers information on buses and bus tickets.
