Sandviks camping at Roxen – camping near Linköping

Updated: October 2026 | Sandviks camping is located on the northern shore of Lake Roxen, about ten kilometers from Bergs sluissar. Here you can combine camping life by the water with excursions along the Göta Canal and to Linköping. We have visited the campsite on several occasions, most recently in 2024 together with our South African friends Henri and Michelle.

What we especially appreciate about Sandviks camping is the location by the water and the green surroundings. It is a relatively simple campsite where the lake and nature are a big part of the experience.

On our first visit in 2012, we had lunch outside the camper in the sun, even though the wind was still cold. Then we socialized with camper friends and had a barbecue dinner that started a little later than planned. Just the kind of thing that goes with a relaxing camping weekend!

When we returned in 2024, Sandvik was a stop on a 2.5 week long motorhome trip with Henri and Michelle. After an excursion to Bergs sluissar we chose to stay the night here. We think our friends, who are used to camping as a nature experience, appreciated the green location at Roxen.

Staying at Caravan Club Sandvik

Sandviks camping is run by the Caravan Club, but you are welcome even if you are not a member. Members have a lower camping fee.

There are places for motorhomes, caravans and tents, as well as ten cabins for rent. There are also quickstop places for shorter overnight stays. The campsite is open all year round, but the reception staff and the range of services vary with the season.

The area has a service building with toilets, paid showers and cooking facilities. There is also a washing machine, dryer, latrine emptying for loose tanks and wifi.

Adjacent to the reception is a kiosk and restaurant with the option of buying food for takeaway. Check current opening hours if you plan to shop or eat here during your visit.

Swimming and activities at the campsite

Next to the campsite is a shallow swimming area with a sandy beach, piers and a swimming ramp. There are also grassy areas where you can sit down and enjoy the lake view.

If you want to get active, there is mini golf, a playground, a ball field and kayak rentals. There is also a sauna and opportunities for walking in the surroundings.

We have mainly used the campsite as a quiet place to spend the night. The proximity to Roxen makes it nice to just take a walk along the water or sit outside the camper for a while.

Close to Bergs locks and Göta Canal

Bergs slussar is located about ten kilometers from Sandviks camping and is a nice excursion destination. Here you can follow the boats through the Göta Canal's impressive lock stairs, walk along the canal and look out over Roxen.

When we traveled with Henri and Michelle in 2024, we wanted to show them the Göta Canal. We were lucky and arrived just as the Wasa Lejon was coming in to lock. It gave us a good opportunity to see how the lock works and made the visit extra fun.

Afterwards we drove on to Sandviks campsite for the evening. A smooth combination of a canal excursion and camping by the lake!

Visit Vreta Monastery

Also near Bergs sluissar is Vreta Monastery, where you can discover a medieval church, monastery ruins and a historic church village. It is a nice place for those who like history or just want to walk in peaceful surroundings.

We have visited Vreta Monastery on another occasion and really liked the environment around the church. In our report we also tell you about Stjärnorp Castle Ruins, which are located along the road between Berg and Sandviks Camping.

Camping life and new acquaintances

On our visit in 2012, we met Ann and Michael, who we had previously spoken to online but had never met in person. They rolled in with their Frankia and there was a lot of chatter about motorhomes, travel and practical solutions.

We talked for so long that the grills didn't get lit until dusk. That's one of the things we like about RV life: a regular camping weekend can also be an opportunity to meet new people.

More to see and do in the neighbourhood

If you want to take a city trip, Linköping is about a half-hour drive from the campsite. There you can visit Old Linköping, the Air Force Museum and the cathedral, among other things. We have collected our tips in our own guide, so you can choose what suits you and your trip.
