Freedom is perhaps the best thing about traveling by motorhome. Being able to wake up by a calm lake in Dalarna one day and park with a view of the Mediterranean a few weeks later is a feeling that is hard to beat. At the same time, life on the road means that you take with you great values – both everything you bring with you, and the vehicle itself.
After many years of traveling, both in Sweden and abroad, we have learned that safety is rarely about a single solution. Rather, it is about several smart habits that together reduce the risk of problems and allow you to focus on what really matters: the experiences. Here are six tips that can make your trip both safer and more relaxed.

1. Choose your parking space carefully
Many thefts happen simply because the thief sees a good opportunity. This means that where you park often plays a bigger role than many people think. Official parking lots and campsites usually feel safe, as do quiet small towns or places where you stand together with others. However, we try to avoid dark or hidden places, especially near cities or major roads.
When we visit larger cities, we often try to choose parking lots where there is movement for most of the day. This provides both greater security and less worry when out exploring.

2. Don't leave valuables visible
This advice is simple, but still one of the most important. Cameras, computers, tablets, and other electronics should never be left visible in the vehicle. The same goes for passports, travel documents, and other valuables.
Even if a camper van looks well-equipped from the outside, you don't need to give potential thieves any more reason to be curious. We sometimes take the things we're most worried about (like our computers) with us in a backpack when we go grocery shopping. Alternatively, we hide them in some odd place where we don't think anyone would look in the first place...

3. Complete with anti-theft protection and alarm
Technology is all the rage, but classic solutions still work. Steering wheel crutches, wheel locks, towbar locks or extra door locks make it more difficult and time-consuming to steal a vehicle. Often, it is precisely the extra time that makes a thief choose an easier target.
Many RV owners also choose to supplement with burglar alarms that react if someone tries to break into the vehicle. Door contacts, motion sensors and sirens can both deter and alert those around them that something is wrong. GPS tracking can also be a valuable complement, as it makes it possible to quickly get information if the vehicle is moved or leaves an area.
The best security is rarely about a single solution, but rather about several types of protection that together reduce the risk of problems.

4. Document vehicles and equipment
If something should happen, it is a great advantage to have documentation close at hand. Feel free to take photos:
- The motorhome from several angles
- Registration number
- Chassis number
- Valuable equipment
- Bicycles, solar panels and other additional equipment
Also save receipts and insurance documents digitally so that they are easily accessible even if you are far from home.

5. Review your insurance before departure
Many people only discover after an incident that their insurance doesn't cover everything they thought (and yes, we've learned this the hard way too!). Calling your insurance company before your trip and asking a few questions can save you a lot of headaches later. Before longer trips, it might be wise to check:
- What applies abroad
- What deductible applies in the event of theft?
- If additional equipment is covered
- How long can the vehicle be left unattended?
- What requirements are placed on locks and security equipment?

6. Get an alert if something happens – with GPS tracking
When you leave your camper to discover a new city, go hiking in nature or enjoy a long dinner, you'd rather not have to worry about what happens to the vehicle in the meantime.
Here, GPS tracking can be a smart complement to both locks and alarms. With Anti-theft protection for motorhome or caravan, such as MiniFinder Xtreme, you can easily keep track of your camper's position directly on your mobile phone — whether you're out on a day trip, sitting in a restaurant or walking around a city.

You can get a motion alert if the vehicle starts moving when it should be stationary, and create a virtual security area (geofence) that sends a notification if the camper leaves the area. This way, you get quick information if something deviates from the normal.

A practical advantage is that the unit is easy to install thanks to its magnetic mount, which means you can get started quickly without any advanced assembly. The long battery life also makes it well suited for longer stops, winter storage or periods when the motorhome is parked at home.

For many, GPS tracking is not just about being able to find a vehicle after a possible theft, but about creating a greater sense of control and security — both during the trip and when the camper is at home between adventures.

Security brings freedom
It may sound contradictory, but the better prepared you are, the freer your journey often feels. When you know you've chosen a good parking spot, have the right insurance, use well-thought-out anti-theft measures and are aware of your vehicle even when you're not around, it becomes easier to focus on what made you start travelling in the first place.
Discovering new places, waking up to new views and enjoying the freedom that only life on the road can give – that's what motorhome life is all about!

Very good. The greatest security is if you yourself feel that a place is safe. You know those who never leave their camper to go into the store with two people.
A family had a friend's car with them, stopped in a parking lot, a family always kept watch, but then one of the cars got hit, the window was broken and things went missing.
