What do you need to consider when driving a car in Germany?
Travelling by car or motorhome in Germany is easy. Here are some things you might want to know:
- No tolls: Passenger cars do not pay road tolls in Germany, and this also applies to motorhomes.
- Environmental zones in some cities: The centres of several cities are classified as 'Umweltzonen', where older diesel vehicles cannot be driven. To drive here, you need to obtain a windscreen sticker, for example from DEKRA.
- Speed limits: If you are driving a car or motorhome under 3.5 tonnes, there is a "free speed" limit on motorways. Heavier motorhomes can travel at a maximum speed of 100 km/h on motorways (except where there are overtaking restrictions, where the maximum speed is 80 km/h) and 80 km/h on roads.
- Fuel: So-called 'city diesel' is cleaner, and more expensive, than regular diesel. Biodiesel 100 is pure rapeseed oil and requires a specially adapted engine.
- Parking rules: "Kurzparkzone" means time-limited parking (you can use a parking disc) and "gebührenpflichtig" means you have to pay for parking.
- Security: Make sure you have Roadside Assistance, so you can get help quickly if you have a problem with your car.

How to find campsites and pitches?
Travelling with a motorhome or other camping vehicle? There are plenty of campsites and many nice and good places to stay overnight. We usually use the CamperContact app to find a place to stay. Campsites can also be found at, for example camping.info or ACSI Eurocampings and pitches can also be found in the German catalogue Bordatlas.

I have travelled the wine route three times and in a week it will be the fourth time. It is a wine and asparagus journey by bus. Incredibly beautiful. We stay down in the Palatinate and go into Alsace as well.
Otherwise, I have previously travelled across different river valleys, with a car and a tent.
Great post 😀 Love, Gerd

We have travelled these, but not the entire Allévägen and also a lot of other beautiful roads. I first travelled around by car 42 years ago. Since then we have travelled around Germany many times and there is a lot to discover on the island.

Britt-Marie Lundgren says:
We've probably sniffed out bits and pieces of several of the themed roads, but it would be fun to really explore one or more of them. Probably only knew Romantische strasse by name.
23 May 2019 - 11:40
Helena says:
We have also more or less accidentally travelled certain routes, but it would be fun to choose one of the roads and really explore! 🙂

When refuelling in Germany, keep in mind that they change the price several times during the day. It is most expensive in the morning and cheapest between 16-18 in the evening. Camper contact is a good app where you can find pitches.
23 May 2019 - 16:58
Helena says:
Well, do they change the prices during the day? Thanks for the tip on this!

BP says:
I have travelled the wine route, but that was many, many years ago. Overall, the "countryside" in Germany, especially in the southern part of the country is very beautiful and well worth visiting. Away from the boring motorways and out on smaller country roads I just say.
23 May 2019 - 20:41
Helena says:
Great that you travelled the Wine Route! I really agree that there are a lot of nice things to discover in the German countryside! The motorways are just for transport, and they are indeed boring.
24 May 2019 - 8:39
Maria's Memoirs says:
There are so many beautiful routes! If the views are beautiful, the road itself from A to B can be half the experience. The Wine Route and the Romantic Route sound extra tempting, especially I would like to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber 🙂.
24 May 2019 - 10:22
Helena says:
We have also become really hungry for these roads! 🙂
