The flight from Athens would take just over three hours - a direct SAS flight from Athens International Airport to Arlanda. Well, things don't always go as planned when you're travelling. Two stopovers and twelve hours later we arrived in Sweden ...

A wonderful week on Andros Island
The week on Andros was really amazing. Andros is a truly authentic Greek island. There is no airport and no gigantic hotels. Sure, there are tourists, but they come by ferry and take in the island's charming and slightly more small-scale hotels. Many of the tourists are also Greeks themselves, who may want a break from the hectic city life in Athens, which makes Greek island life feel even more authentic.
To top it off, we visited Andros at the end of September, i.e. at the end of the tourist season. If you want peace and quiet, this is the perfect time and place.
For us, of course, it was still little Intense. We were here on a press trip, and of course our hosts wanted us to see and experience everything the island has to offer: beaches, hiking trails, caves, historical sights, restaurants... We've already told you about Beaches of Andros, if the capital Chora and about a nice walk to Gerolimni waterfall. We'll tell you more soon!

A few days in Athens
As mentioned above, there is no airport on Andros, but it is still relatively easy to get here. You fly to Athens and then take a ferry that takes two hours. Since we flew to Athens anyway, we wanted to take the opportunity to discover the Greek capital for a few days.
This part of the trip was not part of any collaboration, but a completely private adventure. The same day we took the ferry back to the mainland from Andros, we booked a hotel via Booking.com. For us, location is important and we found a small room at the Athensotel hotel, which is within walking distance of pretty much everything you want to see and do in the capital of Greece.
We have to say that the hotel room was a different experience - with a door directly from the street outside into our room and a loft bed reached via a metal staircase - but still not bad. Apart from the lack of a kettle and drinking glasses, we were super happy and very comfortable.

What we did in Athens? We started quite "hard" with intensive touristy walking around the Acropolis, in 30 degree heat. We really liked Athens (such cosy restaurant streets!), but after the first day it was like we collapsed. I (Helena) got a headache and Peter caught a cold. If you've been following our adventures this spring and summer, you'll know that it's been extremely intense, especially the last few weeks...

On the last night we couldn't even go out to eat. I (Helena) felt sick from my migraine headache, so I ate some yoghurt and Peter helped himself to a chicken drumstick from the nearest supermarket. The next day it was time to get up early for the flight home...

Flight from Athens to Stockholm - with two stopovers
We grabbed a dry piece of bread in the hotel room in the morning and headed to the airport. We thought we could have lunch on the flight, which was due to depart at 11:20. The flight was an hour late. These things happen. We got up in the air, and then what rarely happens - a fellow passenger became seriously ill. Oxygen tubes arrived. The staff shouted over the loudspeakers for a doctor. Some passengers came to help. New announcements requesting a certain type of medicine. Then announcements that we must land immediately in the Bulgarian capital.
I Sofia paramedics rushed in and the sick passenger was rolled out to receive medical assistance. Time rolled on and finally we were told that we would take off again, but unfortunately it would be to Copenhagen instead of Stockholm. It was the only thing that could be arranged.
The staff thanked the passengers for their patience and offered free food. Or well, they apologised that there was hardly any food on board. Someone got a chocolate ball, someone else got a small bag of chips. Peter and I got a hamburger to share.
Late in the afternoon (or had it perhaps become evening?) we landed in Copenhagen. Now it was time for the crew to get off their passport, but they managed to get a new Danish crew. Now we just had to wait to take off... It took another hour or so, but finally it was time to leave for Stockholm, and as the sun set behind the horizon we landed in the Swedish capital.

This week: Grateful for ...
This week we are grateful for the fantastic week on the island of Andros. We're also grateful that SAS brought us home safely, and it felt good that they focused on the sick passenger first and foremost. We hope it ended well!

The week ahead
Now we're going to be home in Stockholm for a little while, and boy will it be nice! As much as we love travelling, we also have a need to "land" from time to time. It probably won't be for very long, but maybe two weeks anyway ...
You can expect reports on Greece, Italy and Germany, and in addition, several of our other writers have sent exciting stories ready for publication. Hope you'll join us! Have a great Friday and weekend!

Nice to read about Andros. Didn't end up among our favourite Greek islands when we were there, but that was a long time ago. Maybe we would think differently on a visit today. Greece has so many beautiful islands, but surely we might think differently if we went boating today, (Which we did for several summers and longer periods from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s.
Yes, Athens is a special city and definitely a good idea to come here in September. Know that we stayed at Synthagmatorget also a very good location.
Wow, a long journey home - but glad everything worked out. I also hope that the one who was sick got better. .
Yes, you've had an intense programme so no wonder your body is starting to complain.
Wishing you a peaceful and pleasant weekend.

Yes, there are many beautiful islands in Greece, and we have only visited a small fraction ...

What a journey home! And the poor passenger who became acutely ill in the air, what a hard feeling, but also reassuring to know that it can actually be solved after all.
For you it was also a bit of a mess of course, but I'm glad that everything went well there too!
Andros seems to be a cosy island, and nothing I've heard of so much 🙂 Fun to hang out 😉
Have a nice Friday!
Hugs

Yes, in a way it feels good to know that they take care of sick passengers in this way! Then it was a hard journey for us of course, but you just have to take it ... Andros is a great island! Wish you all the best!

Wow, what a journey! Something you don't have to experience very often, thank goodness. Hope you get a little calmer now for a while. Have a nice weekend!

Yes, it was an unexpectedly difficult journey, but you have to be glad that you were not the one who suffered from illness! Have a nice weekend!

The hotel in Athens was right up my street. Checked their website and WOW I just say. The hotel's "piece" is very reminiscent of our hotel in Tel Aviv, but there were both kettles and drinking glasses; -)
Love the 3D mural on the facade there -WOW!!!
A journey home with obstacles, so to speak. But at least you got home. Hope you've got rid of your migraine and Peter has recovered from his cold.
Take it easy for a couple of weeks. The way you've been stressing over the last few months, your bodies could probably do with a bit of laziness:-)

We also liked the hotel, great style and perfect location! Coffee had to be in town and we managed to get plastic glasses at a place where we bought water ... 😉

What a terrible journey home it was. But it is understandable that the health of the sick passenger was the priority, not getting there on time.
I really liked Athens. Although the city was run down with a lot of graffiti, at least when I was there, the positives outweighed all the historical sights and charming neighbourhoods like Plaka and Anafiotika.
27 September 2025 - 19:06
Helena says:
Yes, but I agree, it felt good after all that they went down and took care of the passenger. Would have felt hard otherwise ... Of course there is a lot of graffiti in Athens, agree, but we still liked the atmosphere. Felt relaxed, nice and safe!

The RSS feed is acting up again, so thanks for commenting with me so I was reminded to check in here. So good that the sick person got help and that you then came home safely albeit later than expected. Perfect to have dinner in the hotel room, will be good with a bunch of favourites from the grocery store.

Hi Anna! Yes, and now we've had some extra problems with the site for a few days (e.g. not being able to share posts on Facebook in the normal way), so I understand that it's messed up ... The other problems should be solved now (finally!), let's see how it goes with the RSS feed ...!

So sad to get sick while travelling. Get well soon!
And so hard to get sick on the plane... it makes it a lot... good that the person came to care quickly.
Nice to read about your beautiful destination.

Yes, it must be terrible to get that sick on an aeroplane! Still, it's nice to know that they do what they can to help a sick passenger when it's important!

It's annoying when travelling gets complicated, but here it was an important reason.
Athens brings back memories, I was there in an April week ages ago. It is probably wise to travel there in spring or autumn because the city is like a pot. Lots to see, definitely and nice to stroll around in alleys and streets.
28 September 2025 - 12:25
Helena says:
April sounds like a good time for Athens! It was a bit too hot when we were there actually, even though it was mid September 😉

Tough journey home, but writing like the others, illness must take precedence, and I hope it went well for them.
But how hungry everyone must have been, half a burger, well, it could have been worse.
Take it easy and rest for a few weeks!
28 September 2025 - 18:59
Helena says:
Yes, we were hungry, but you survive that ... (I'll remember for next time to put a chocolate bar or something in the bag!) Anyway, felt good that they prioritised the sick passenger.

No wonder you crashed there for a while! But so hard with the lack of food from that day and on top of that this flight without food. Oh how I would have felt bad. But, of course even worse for the seriously ill person. Hope it went well!
