Things to do in Italy – our best tips
We have traveled around in Italy on several occasions, both on shorter trips and longer road trips with our camper. Italy is a fantastic country to travel around, filled with exciting cities and beautiful beaches. Here we recommend some gems and experiences that you don't want to miss during a trip to Italy.

25 things to see and do in Italy
1. Experience romantic Rome
Rome is a city that almost feels overwhelming on first visit – in a good way. There are historical sights in almost every neighborhood, from Colosseum and Roman Forum to small piazzas with fountains.
We think the best way to experience Rome is to mix classic sights with spontaneous walks. Sit at an outdoor cafe, order an espresso and just watch life go by.

2. Explore Venice
Venice is truly a city like no other. Wandering along the canals, getting lost in narrow alleys and suddenly ending up in a small square is an experience in itself.
Sure, it's touristy – but it's also hard not to be charmed. If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, we recommend getting up early or heading out in the evening.

3. Visit Florence
Florence is famous for its art and architecture. It is home to some of the world's most famous works, but also history and vibrant culture. For example, you can walk across the Ponte Vecchio and up to the Piazzale Michelangelo viewpoint.

4. Find holiday tranquility in Tropea
Tropea is one of those places in Italy that really surprised us. The town, which is dramatically located on a cliff edge, is almost surreally beautiful. We were particularly captivated by the relaxed feeling – here we enjoyed the holiday tranquility. Perfect for those who want to combine swimming, good food and a slightly calmer atmosphere.

5. Tourists in Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre is perhaps one of Italy's most famous places. The five villages lie like colorful pearls along the coast and are connected by hiking trails and trains.
It may be good to be prepared for areas that attract a lot of tourists during high season, and for this reason we chose not to stay when we passed nearby with a camper van in the summer. We would like to see the villages another time.

6. Make a city trip to Milan
Milan feels a bit more metropolitan than many other Italian cities. It’s all about fashion, shopping and pace, but there’s also plenty of culture. Our top tips are to visit the Duomo cathedral, stroll around the beautiful Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and enjoy an aperitivo – it’s almost a must here.

7. Vacation in Sardinia
Sardinia is a true holiday paradise with fabulous beaches and crystal clear green waters. There are plenty of nice swimming spots and opportunities for wonderful boat trips and other excursions. You can also hike, stroll through cozy small towns and enjoy the island's food culture.

8. Experience Sicily
Sicily is like its own little country within the country. Here, influences from different cultures are mixed, which is noticeable in both the food and the architecture. Sicily is suitable for those who want to combine history and culture with food and swimming. We think the best way to discover Sicily is to get around by car, or by camper van like we did.

9. Be fascinated by Pompeii
Pompeii was on our bucket list for a long time before we finally got there, and is one of the most fascinating places we have visited in Italy. Walking around the ruins and imagining life as it once was is special – not least seeing everyday phenomena such as pedestrian crossings and food stalls. The area is large, so allow plenty of time!

10. Go skiing in the Dolomites
The Dolomites offer some of the most dramatic mountain scenery we’ve seen in Europe. In winter it’s a skiing paradise, but the area is just as beautiful in summer. Then you can hike, cycle or just enjoy the view. This is a part of Italy that feels a little different – almost alpine in its own way.

11. Explore Lake Garda
Lake Garda is a classic and beloved destination – and it’s easy to see why. With charming villages, great places to swim and beautiful views in every direction.
We like to travel between different places because they all have a slightly different character – among our favorites are: Sirmione, Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda. This is also a good destination if you are traveling by camper or car.

12. Stroll through historic Verona
Verona is a city that often gets overlooked, but is definitely worth a stop. The historic center is compact and easy to explore on foot. The arena is still used for performances, which gives it a special feel. This is a city big enough for a day or two.

13. Shop for wine in Valpolicella
Valpolicella is an area we really appreciate, and where we return time and time again, not least to buy wine. Amarone is produced here, among other things, and there are plenty of vineyards to visit. In addition, the landscape here is green and undulatingly beautiful.

14. Take photos at Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies is one of the most photographed lakes in Italy, which is not surprising considering the surroundings. The water is turquoise and surrounded by dramatic mountains. We recommend that you come here early in the morning to avoid being crowded with other keen photographers. This is a place that truly feels like a postcard in real life.

15. Explore Chioggia – Little Venice
Chioggia is sometimes called “Little Venice”, but we think it’s a place with a feel all its own. Here you’ll find canals, bridges and colourful houses – but far fewer tourists.
We especially enjoyed just strolling around, sitting on an outdoor terrace and taking in the atmosphere. This small town is a perfect alternative or complement to Venice if you want to experience something a little more genuine.

16. Explore Naples
We can admit that we found Naples dirty, messy and littered, but it is also lively and full of energy. Here you will find the birthplace of pizza, and one thing you must do here is of course try authentic Neapolitan pizza. Otherwise, the city works as a base for excursions to Pompeii and the Castle of Caserta.

17. Take a guided tour of Vatican City
Vatican City is small in size but big in significance. St. Peter's Basilica is impressive, both inside and out, and the Sistine Chapel is one of the most famous art experiences in the world. We recommend booking tickets in advance to avoid the queues.

18. Discover Umbria
Umbria is often called Tuscany's quieter neighbor – and that's pretty much true. It has rolling countryside, small villages and a more relaxed pace. We travelled around here in our camper van and experienced the peace and quiet. This is a region where you can take it easy and just enjoy.

19. See the Leaning Tower of Pisa
Pisa is perhaps best known for its leaning tower, but there is more to see than that. The entire area around Piazza dei Miracoli is impressive, and you can also stroll along the river. Pisa is simply a classic destination in Italy.

20. Explore the Marche region
Marche is a region that is often forgotten, which is a bit of a shame. Here you will find both coast, mountains and charming villages, but significantly fewer tourists. There are also plenty of experiences for those who like food and wine. A good alternative if you have already been to Tuscany! Here you will find more reading:
- The Marche region both surprises and impresses
- Small-scale and genuine in Marche
- Italian wines and caves in the Marche region

21. Visit the Castle of Caserta
The Castle of Caserta is one of Italy's most impressive buildings, yet still relatively unknown. The palace is often compared to Versailles, and the gardens are enormous. We were actually a bit surprised by how grand it is. Perfect as an excursion from Naples!

22. Travel around Puglia
Puglia (Apulia) offers a different side of Italy. Here you will find white houses, olive groves and a long coastline. We visited, among other things Cathedral of Otranto, and another attraction is the Trulli houses in Alberobello. The region still feels quite authentic compared to many other parts of the country.

23. Swim on the Italian Riviera
The Italian Riviera stretches along Ligurian coast in northwestern Italy and offers a nice mix of beaches, small towns and dramatic views. Here you will find both classic seaside resorts and more spectacular places like Cinque Terre and Portofino.

24. Drive through Tuscany
Tuscany is almost the epitome of Italy, with its vineyards and green cypresses. Even though we haven't yet had the chance to visit this part of Italy, it feels like an area that deserves a place on the list. Here you can travel around by car, visit villages and vineyards, and enjoy the scenery.

25. Taste Italian gastronomy
We think food is an important part of the trip and in Italy there are many delicious flavors, not least in the form of cheeses, cold cuts and vegetables. Of course you want to try pasta and pizza too… and gelato!

Italy, so much wonderful to discover... Sardinia and Puglia seem interesting for the next plan... after Trentino - if it works out considering oil prices...

Here I could "walk on Memory Lane" again. I have visited many cities and skied in the Dolomites. Yes, and of course I have been to the San Siro stadium in Milan ;-)

Italy is a wonderful country to travel to and we would love to go there more often. Lake Garda is on our list and then with the caravan but this summer it won't be. Rome is definitely a fantastic city. Venice is also nice.

I have been to Rome as a child and Venice in the mid-80s. Otherwise, the country is an unwritten page on the wish list. A wish that will be fulfilled on our honeymoon in September (I choose not to think about the world situation yet…). We will look further at your links as well.
