Sailing in Germany can be anything from enjoying the sun on deck to holding on during storms and rain. We learnt this during the day yesterday. It was a wonderful and refreshing sailing trip from Krummin to Greifswald.

Sailing in Germany - From Krummin
We are on a sailing trip with South Coast Baltic Boating Rally 2019, and this morning it was time to leave the charming little city centre. the natural harbour in Krummin. There was a little concern that it would be difficult to get away, as it was so shallow in the harbour that we were standing on the bottom.
Luckily, it's only silt and mud, and for safety's sake we got help from a motorboat to pull us out as quickly as possible in the headwind. The start went more smoothly than expected, and soon we were off!

Haven't you forgotten something?
A young guy, who belongs to the sailboat gang, was on our sailboat in the morning. When we got help from the motor boat (which also belongs to our gang), he jumped over there. We got off and sailed away, while the crew of the big boat next to us shouted in horror after us "The child! The child!". They thought we were sailing away and forgot the guy, but luckily it wasn't that bad.

Sailing in Germany in good weather
We were now sailing in the direction of Greifswald, which is on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. To begin with, we had good winds and bright sunshine. Wonderful sailing weather in other words.

When the weather is calm and sunny, you have plenty of time to take lots of photos and play with your camera. When it's really started blowing, a little later, when it was more difficult to get the time and opportunity to do that.

Bridge opening - Peenebrücke bridge
We passed the Peenebrücke bridge in Wolgast, which only opens twice a day. We arrived nine minutes before opening, and that was plenty.

Sailing in Germany in strong winds and rain
After a while, we got out into open water and the wind was blowing hard. It was hard to find time to think about photography, as the only thing we had time to focus on was stowing away all the loose objects, putting on life jackets and holding on ...
There was a photo, and some film clips that we shared on Instagram stories, if you follow @freedomtravelnews on Instagram. In the photo below, you can imagine that the horizon was of course straight, and then you realise how much the sailboat was leaning ...

After a while the storm subsided and it started to rain instead. It was worst for our skipper of course, who had to stand at the helm. It was really a varied day of sailing in Germany.

Arriving in Greifswald
Eventually we approached Greifswald and drove into the long river called Ryck, which runs into and through the city. Here we also had to pass another bridge opening.

The river is fantastic and lined with greenery, nice houses, piers and lots of small boats of different sizes and models. Now we have arrived in Greifswald and had a really nice dinner in a cosy houseboat. Tomorrow we will tell you more about this city!

It can really vary when you are out sailing and variety pleases, it is said. Although the skipper may not agree with that who can't hide indoors when the rain comes 🙂.
Nice timing on the bridge opening there!
Wonderful pictures again - especially the last one is so delicious 🙂 .

This is what sailing life is often like. Highly variable weather and winds. And the wind is needed to be able to sail. It feels really fun! I like sailing so...

Fantastic pictures. Of course, I like them in the "fine weather" best. Logical, right;-)
Gita seems to be mostly sitting still, holding on and trying to survive;-) But you guests, because you are definitely not guests, seem to be mostly doing nothing and enjoying yourselves. So when the weather is nice;-)
That Peenebrücke bridge was incredibly powerful. I like the design.
What an adventure you will have!
