Our last stops on this summer's long motorhome trip were Husum and Sankt Peter-Ording on the North Sea coast of Germany. Here, the North Sea wind blows briskly, the fishing shops are densely packed and the beaches are so wide that they resemble deserts. The North Sea coast in Germany offers many gems, and we also found a good place to park our motorhome.

From Trier to Husum in Germany
Since we chose to spend a few days in beautiful Moselle valleys and exciting Trier there was a tough drive at the end of the trip. Peter drove from Trier, and it was a full day on the German roads. The next day we took the time to explore both Husum and Sankt Peter-Ording. What nice places there are on the North Sea coast in Germany!

Charming Husum on the German North Sea coast
Husum is located in the district of Nordfriesland in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The weather was rough when we arrived and the rain was hanging in the air, but we still fell in love with this cosy little town! Here the fishing boats are close together, and in every corner you can find a fish shop or a fish restaurant.

There are several museums in town, such as the North Sea Museum and the Maritime Museum. If you just want to take it easy, it's also cosy just to walk around the cobbled streets, among all the charming houses with beautiful doors and bay windows.
Husum in Germany is a small harbour town in Nordfriesland, and its name was first mentioned in 1409. With large daily markets and fish and shellfish There is plenty of charm in every corner for a wonderful holiday or weekend. The quay forms an attractive part of Husum on the German North Sea coast.

The market was in full swing, selling everything from vegetables and flowers to clothes and gadgets of various kinds.

We also felt "compelled" to snap a picture of the tattoo studio "Freedom Tattoo". Great name, right?

Beach walk in fresh winds
We took the motorhome down to the beach and took a walk along the sea in the fresh North Sea air. By the way, there is also a campsite down here (Regenbogen Husum), if you prefer to stand by the water. When it is warm and high tide, you can swim here, and there are both classic German beach baskets and a beach café. For now, a brisk walk among the artworks and sheep was enough.

Sankt Peter-Ording
We also explored Sankt Peter-Ording, which is located southwest of Husum, on a small protruding headland. Out here is lots of campsites and pitches, and despite the bad weather, we met a lot of motorhomes.

We drove to the beach which is incredibly wide. We walked to the edge of the beach, but the beach is so wide that some people choose to take their car or campervan to the water. For a fee of 6 euro/day (not overnight) you can park in the middle of the beach.

Walking across the beach is almost like walking in a desert, but with the strong North Sea wind blowing through your hair. The strong wind also makes the beach popular with kite surfers and the air was full of colourful sails.

RV park in Husum
When we came back to Husum, we stood in the central car park. Loof's motorhome harbour, at Dookkoogstrasse 7. For €12 per day you get access to electricity, a service centre and the possibility to empty tanks and fill water. It took us some time to find out where to pay, but eventually we realised that you have to go to the Loof fish shop, which is on the other side of the railway crossing, as seen from the car park.

They are total white spots on our map.

These German cities, all equally cosy and there is always somewhere I can park. In the summer, it would certainly have been cosy to park on the beach, but now it looked a bit cold.

Thank you for letting us join you on your holiday. It is wonderful to be able to travel and look around. But you hardly have time to "RELAX" as you wish and want to do on your holiday. From what we understand, you have a high tempo almost all the time. We have not yet come down to more southern nodes because it has been so heavenly good weather in "SVEDALA" this year. Now it will probably be "Thailand for about 3 months in the winter of 2018 - 19 instead. Have a good time.

You have seen and experienced a lot and I can imagine that it now takes time to digest and absorb everything. You have made a fantastic journey and it has been great fun to follow it. J
I was thinking yesterday about the trips we made in the USA, a couple of trips, a long time ago, when we were away for about three months. But then we have alternated with air, bus, train, boat, rented camper and rental car. This was long before computers and mobile phones and when I now read the travel diaries, I wondered how to get everything practical. But it worked perfectly. Welcome home again!
01 September 2018 - 17:18

Glad you followed our journey Ditte! I also sometimes wonder how it worked in the past when you did not have the internet, but it still worked! 🙂

It has been particularly fun for me to visit areas where I have never been or only passed through. And here Germany is high on my list. I've seen a bit of Berlin, southern Germany, a bit of the Moselle valley and some of the old East Germany as a youth. But you have opened my mind and eyes a bit. Thank you for that!

Husum is right up my street. The houses are so charming, and there are lots of fish restaurants on it. Yep! The town was pretty much empty. I guess it was due to the weather.
Eight hours 'on the move' sounds tough, especially considering the weather that greeted you in northern Germany.
