Our motorhome adventure with a total of seven motorhomes, the "Beach Basket Challenge", has started with a first day in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. This was an intensive day with lots of interesting experiences and tasty flavours, which perhaps ended a little differently than expected.
Table of contents
Stena Line Gothenburg - Kiel
We had a really nice ferry crossing with Stena Germanica from Gothenburg to Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. There was a pre-drink in C-view and a buffet dinner at restaurant Taste. Fun to finally meet and get to know each other in the Beach Basket gang!
After dinner, we had the chance to get up on the bridge and learn more about Stena Germanica, from her weight and size to how she handles storms (very well, apparently). Interesting!
Arriving in Schleswig-Holstein
Schleswig-Holstein is Germany's northernmost federal state, bordering Denmark to the north. We started with a day here, before continuing our journey in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Lunch at Odin restaurant
After some shopping at the large Citti store in Kiel, we set the GPS to restaurant Odin at the Viking museum Haithabu northwest of Kiel. Here we tried one of two typical North German dishes: matjesfilet or "sauerfleisch".
We were a little unsure of what to expect from these dishes, but we were super happy with our matjes, and even those who ventured into the meat dish seemed pleasantly surprised.
Haithabu Viking Museum
After lunch we walked over to Haithabu Viking Museum which is right next to the Odin restaurant. In the Viking Age, there was a busy trading village here, using the water to transport goods. Today, a few houses have been built to show what it might have been like long ago.
We were guided around the site by the wonderfully knowledgeable guide Jürgen Tröger, who enthusiastically took us to the joys and hardships of the Viking Age.
There are also the animals that the Vikings had in their time: sheep and very woolly and cute cows.
Dinner with asparagus
After the visit to Haithabu, we rolled south for about two hours, to get to Mt. Gut Barsthorstwhich is also in Schleswig-Holstein. This nice place is located in the countryside, and here we had the chance to taste the "white gold", that is, asparagus. The asparagus was served with salmon, potatoes, hollandaise sauce and churned butter. Fantastically good!
Whiskey tasting at Mackmyra ... in Germany
Right next to the Gut Basthorst restaurant, the Swedish whiskey Mackmyra has a small showroom and shop. The Swedish whiskey is marketed here in Germany for Germans, but Swedes also choose to come here to buy the whiskey at a better price.
We got the chance to do a small whiskey tasting - fun! Since we would roll on to a campsite afterwards, unfortunately only half of the company could participate in the tasting and in our case it was me (Helena) because I do not have a driving license ... Which whiskey was my favourite? It was the one called Äppelblom!
How did the evening end in Schleswig-Holstein?
The plan for this long and exciting day was to stay overnight at camping Güster. We had been informed that the campsite would stay open for us until 22:00 in the evening, but there must have been some misunderstanding, because when we arrived it was as closed as it could be.
Fortunately, motorhome people are relaxed and take things as they come. So what did we do? We simply slept in the car park outside the campsite. After all, you have most of what you need in the motorhome!

Birgitta Kärreman says:
So far so good! We eat food and we also get umleitung, we have used Eckenförde's long promenade and night parking unexpectedly happens to us too? So everything seems normal? but I would like you to describe the surroundings while travelling. Wide roads, deep mountains and high valleys, open farmland or through small villages and country lanes? I know what it looks like, I have done your trip many times, but for those who you will attract on the trip with the final destination Rügen, it may be good to know!
Good trip?

Helena says:
Yes, the unexpected is part of the "normal" 😉 Great suggestion that we should describe the surroundings more, we will think about that! ?

What a wonderful "challenge" you are on.
Apple blossom whisky. An odd combination.
Fun to test a new motorhome, I guess.

Wonderful experiences you had on day 1. Fortunately you all have a motorhome so there is no major panic at a closed campsite.
It is said that you humans eat with your eyes, and with the fine presentation of food, I am now beginning to understand this.

Motorhome is amazing! 🙂

Ama de casa says:
Oops... There, the motorhome clearly has a big advantage over tents... Although we have in fact poached a night at a campsite in Germany. Easier to force the barriers with a tent under the arm 😉 (The "permanent residents" at the campsite cheered happily and it was they who encouraged us from the beginning 😉 ).
What a great start you got! Except possibly the thing with the closed campsite, but you solved that very well 😀.
The guide Tröger, by the way? Sounds like one of Snow White's mates 😀.
Have a good trip!

Helena says:
Motorhomes are great! (But we have tried to force barriers once, when our payment method did not work and no staff was present. A bit annoying ;))

What a great start and what good dishes you were served. Mums I just say especially for the typically German matjes fillets, which taste completely different from the Swedish variant. Also white asparagus:-)
