Lingnåre Cultural Reserve
Lingnåre Cultural Reserve is a 28-hectare area that was designated a cultural reserve in 2004. The aim is to "preserve a unique, largely preserved cultural landscape from the Viking Age and the Middle Ages and to nurture its cultural, historical and biological values".
The reserve contains remains of burial sites and house foundations from the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. At the "entrance" to the reserve there is a car park and two trails start here, the Viking Trail and the Medieval Trail. There is also a newly built barn with a small exhibition and a dry toilet.
Lingnåre cultural reserve is located on the Hållnäs peninsula in Tierp municipality, about 17 kilometres north of Stockholm.
Lingnåre exhibition
The barn with the small exhibition is really cute and feels welcoming. When you enter, you can switch on a lamp on a timer. Here you can see photos and learn about the history of Lingnåres during the Viking and medieval periods. You can also pick up some brochures about the "Viking world view".
Really exciting to read again about the world tree Yggdrasil, the three norns that spin the thread of life, the bridge Bifrost that leads between the world of humans and the asagods, and everything else that belongs to our ancient conception of the world.
The Viking Trail
The Viking Trail is 800 metres long and shows the history of the Viking Age. The trail takes you to a Viking settlement, where people lived more than 1000 years ago. Among other things, they have found a house foundation with a fireplace and various exciting artefacts, such as pearls and an Arabic silver coin.
You also pass an ancient burial ground with some 30 graves of various shapes and sizes. There is also a rune stone with an inscription from the 11th century AD. A bit dizzying, when you think about it!
The medieval path
The one kilometre-long medieval trail tells the story of the slightly later history of the area. The path leads to Lingnåres medieval village where you can see the deep stone well and traces of the farmhouses. Signs along the way show pictures of what life here might have been like in the past.
green grove hill
Near Lingnåre Culture Reserve you will also find Grönlundsbacken, where there are around 50 graves from the Viking Age. The graves are round, rectangular or square, and there is also a fine set of ships here.
The plaques describe how a funeral ceremony might have taken place. The deceased was often burned dressed in their best clothes along with costume buckles, jewellery and other belongings such as combs, knives and keys.
We thought this was a nice visit. If you still want to walk a little in nature, it is fun to learn a little at the same time. We will probably have to check out more cultural reserves at some point!
